De Struise Brouwers

ABV:  10%

IBU:  27

Style:  Belgian Quadrupel

Belgium-based De Struise Brouwers produced this beautiful baby gem known as the “Pannepot.” Since 2003, this beer has been their signature brew among other delightful beers such as the Struisse Rosse and Red Haired Jeanne. I was told by a friend that it was “the best beer the world has to offer,” and after that, I could not refuse. (I mean, how could I?)

The name “Pannepot” refers to the fishing boats in the village of De Panne, located in North Belgium, as shown on the obscure label.  This Belgian-style Quad is complex and savory.  It pours an opaque, dark brown color with a foamy, off-white head, followed by earthy aromas of dark fruit and molasses.  The taste travels from dark cherries to tart fruits to licorice and caramel.  The mouth feel is full-bodied and lingers on the tongue for a long time with flavors of sage and spices.

Pannepot is a beer that you want to spend time with.  It will keep you on your toes, while providing strong companionship.  You will want want your time with Pannepot to last forever, but like all things beautiful, it is fleeting.  Buy this beer when you can.  Sip this beer slowly.  Don’t let it ruin the taste of your other favorites. Thank you Pannepot for reminding me of what is good in the world…
