Pittsburgh breweries and the Pittsburgh Diversity Council are taking action to support women in beer. 

Necromancer Brewing, Trace Brewing and the Pittsburgh Brewery Diversity Council recently joined together to create She Knows Beer. This is the first beer of a collaborative series releasing quarterly that celebrates women and female-presenting people working in the beer industry and in craft beer as a whole.

“Early on in discussions we wanted to do a collaboration project that brings awareness to women in the brewing industry, how important they are and how they contribute at their breweries,” described Lauren Hughes, head brewer at Necromancer and member of the PBDC.

The Pittsburgh Brewery Diversity Council formed in October of 2020 with the mission to elevate underrepresented groups in craft beer. They want the community within craft beer to be as diverse as the beer in the glass. The council has big plans for the future including collaborations, events and even scholarships. 

Each collaborating brewery that participates in the project will partner with a female identifying member of their brewery to design and brew the beer. The She Knows Beer logo was created by Bailey Allegretti of another Pittsburgh brewery, Grist House. 

“I am so grateful to see all the support this project has received and how many people are enjoying the beer…” Lauren stated. “It was great to work with another brewery, Trace, who is also focused on having a diverse workplace.” 

The first beer in the series is a Hazy IPA is fermented with orange puree hopped with Simcoe, Citra and Amarillo. The first pour emits a big citrus aroma and presents a beautiful apricot color. The beer is juicy and fresh like squeezed orange juicy with a hoppy kick. Each collaboration will be a different style determined by the brewery involved. 

A portion of the proceeds of this first round of She Knows Beer will benefit SistersPGH, a Black, Trans led nonprofit organization that provides resources, advocacy and affordable housing for Queer and Trans BIPOC.

The next beer in the series will be released in September with Dancing Gnome Brewery.
