Star Wars: The Hype Awakens | *Updated 10/31*

October 31, 2015 |

A long time ago in a land far far away (Picture Rocks, Pennsylvania)…

In 1996, my parents let me watch Star Wars: A New Hope for the first time while vacationing at my grandma’s house in Pennsylvania.

It’s the moment they – and I – realized that I was a nerd. A Star Wars nerd, specifically.

Who Said It: Donald Trump or a Complete Asshole?

August 27, 2015 |

Haha, that Donald Trump guy is so wacky! The things he says are so zany and OUT THERE and awesome, right? It’s so funny seeing that guy from “The Apprentice” run for President, especially since he doesn’t talk or act like normal politicians. Refreshing, right? Even if he IS a bit outlandish at times. But it’s quirky and fun. Which is why so many sites are playing that game of “Who Said It: Donald Trump or ___?” He’s been compared to cartoonish TV characters and at least a couple actual cartoons.

So here’s someone else we can compare Donald Trump’s quotes to, just to point out how entertaining his madcap eccentricity is. Take this quiz and see if you can tell who said it: Donald Trump or a Complete Asshole? Read More

Humans of Stock Photos

July 9, 2015 |

By now you’ve heard of “Humans of New York,” the blog/social media content of photographer Brandon Stanton. Stanton takes photographs of random people he meets on the streets of New York City, coupled with captions quoting the people he meets.

They’re usually quite profound—for example: Read More

My car really wants me to listen to this Bronze Radio Return song.

June 26, 2015 | 2

I’m afraid of getting into my car. Each time I turn the ignition, I wince in anticipation for what awaits me. More than traffic or accidents or the stresses of driving LA’s streets, I am afraid of something that haunts me every time I get into the car:

“Above, Below” by Bronze Radio Return. Read More

“Jurassic World” Review – Featuring the Comments section

June 12, 2015 |

22 years after the original “Jurassic Park” film, the fourth installment in the franchise will be released this weekend. “Jurassic World” is expected to create a big draw at the box office, to the point where critical reception is almost irrelevant.

But just in case, we at PorchDrinking want to bring you insight into “Jurassic World” from the only source you can really trust to accurately gauge the quality of any work. And no, we don’t mean Peter Travers or Roger Ebert or any of those entertainment shows. We’re talking about the magical place where grammar, punctuation, capitalization, syntax, and measured opinions go to diecomments sections on the internet. That’s rightfor the next few paragraphs, I’m putting my English degree on a shelf and welcoming my guest contributors from the dark recesses of internet comments sections.

Pop Culture Week in Review | May 23-29

May 29, 2015 |

Happy Friday, my fellow pop geeks!
You may notice that something here reeks
This pop culture recap’s in rhyme —
And not for the first time —
And it’s Drew’s 4th recap in as many weeks

But this pop culture recap won’t miss a beat
I have every celeb story and tweet
Limericks are gimmicks, but listen,
I don’t ask approval from Tristan,
Admit it, pulling it off would be a feat

Pop Culture Week in Review: May 16-22

May 22, 2015 |

After doing a 500-word limit the last few weeks, it’s time to really let the Pop Culture Week in Review breathe. Instead, this week’s entry will read sort of like a pop culture journal entry. After all, these recaps aren’t here to give you polished, full-on reporter details of what happened in the week. I’m here to synthesize the week in pop culture for you, outputting one dork’s impressions. With that in mind: Below is a chronologically accurate re-telling of the pop culture I consumed and observed this week, copied out of my notebook. Only minor style changes have been made. Enjoy! Pop Culture Week in Review (in 500 Words) | 5/10 – 5/16

May 15, 2015 |

Remember last week when I did the pop culture week in review in EXACTLY 500 words? Well, I’m going to do the same thing this week. 500 words – no more, no less – to recap the week in entertainment news. Hey, only 57 more of these posts until I pass the word count of “Of Mice and Men.” Only 374 more until I pass “The Fellowship of the Ring.” And only 842 more until I eclipse the latest George RR Martin book.

Yes, I counted. Anyway… Here we go! Read More
