A Netflix Addict’s Cry for Help

January 24, 2013 | 6

I am writing this piece at my computer during one of the rare free moments when I’m not consuming media. About four and a half years ago, while sitting in my freshman college dorm’s common area, I heard someone mention Hulu.com. Two years ago, my cousin bought me a trial of something called Netflix.

Since discovering these (and other) ways to enjoy movies and TV, they’ve become a huge part of my life.

And I’m not sure whether that’s a great thing.

Oscar Nomination Predictions (UPDATED!)

January 9, 2013 |

In perhaps my least snarky PorchDrinking article to date, I’m going to take some shots in the dark and guess who will be nominated for the Academy Awards. PD is looking forward to bringing you some great Oscars coverage, but here now is one guy telling you what he thinks (and hopefully having something to brag about once nominees are announced tomorrow). I’ve marked movies I’ve seen with ***asterisks***, so you can know I’m not full of it. Watch nominations come out, then keep coming back to PorchDrinking.com for more Oscars coverage from our team of amateur pop-culture experts.

UPDATE: Oscar nominations were announced this morning (Thursday). A few surprises, especially in the directing category. I’ve added some additional commentary, partly in the interest of giving you the most information possible, and partly because I’m proud of how close I was in a lot of cases.

Below, I’ve bolded the predictions that were accurate.

Saul vs. Saul | A Matchup Between Fan Favorites on Homeland and Breaking Bad

December 27, 2012 |

If you’re not watching Homeland, shame on you. If you’re not watching Breaking Bad, shame on you. These are two of the BEST shows on television right now—so good that even as they get more and more insane and less and less believable, I still find myself more addicted with every episode. Read More

HOW TO PREPARE FOR THE APOCALYPSE

In case you hadn’t heard, there are a few people out there who really and truly believe that we’re all going to die on Friday, December 21st. And a lot more people who don’t truly believe it but ironically prepare for the end of the world, foretold by the ending of the Mayan calendar.

Maybe you’re preparing for the impending apocalypse, or maybe you just think it’s funny to joke about the end of days. In either case, it’s useful to know how to prepare for what will happen when the world falls apart. Here’s your guide to how to get through the apocalypse. Good luck! If I see you in the fallout, let’s get a beer.

I Think I’m a Lakers Fan, and I Think it’s Because They Suck

December 10, 2012 | 1

FINE, I’ll say it. In writing. On the internet.

I am a Lakers fan.

That confession weighs on me, because I have always considered myself something of a Lakers hater. Like the New York Yankees or the New England Patriots, they’re just so easy to hate—big market, big star, tons of success … it makes a small town Reds/Bengals/Packers fan like myself hate big city teams who seem to win all the time. A Preview of a Live-Tweeted Thanksgiving

November 21, 2012 |

Tonight, I take a red-eye out of Los Angeles to go home (can I still call it home if I don’t live there?) for Thanksgiving. Many of us at PorchDrinking – and our readers and friends – will do the same. Here is a preview of what your friends will be tweeting over the holiday. It’s a preview of one man’s hypothetical live-tweeted Thanksgiving weekend, to get you into the spirit and prepare you for the updates from friends as they slowly tire of that warm feeling of being around loved ones.

2012 Presidential Election Night Social Media Preview

November 5, 2012 |

Stay off of the internet on Tuesday. Don’t log on at all (unless it’s for PorchDrinking.com). On the day of the 2012 election, you know what the internet and social media sites are going to offer – a bunch of crap you really don’t want to deal with.

Pop Culture Week in Review – October 21-27, 2012

A few things we learned from this week in pop culture. Buckle up, this is a long article – almost as long as the script for “The Hobbit” or the line outside 30 Rock to see Louis CK on SNL.

Drink Like A Fictional Character

October 18, 2012 | 5

Goodness gracious, people from movies and TV love alcohol. I’m one of those nerds who scrutinizes any scene with drinking to figure out what specifically characters ordered (my friends got angry when we went to see “Friends With Benefits” because I was the guy saying “Oh, they’re drinking Shiner Bock. I like that beer!”). But you don’t always have to study beer labels or examine a cocktail glass to deduce what characters are drinking; sometimes they order stuff so often, their drink becomes a character trait. Here’s a look at what some of our favorite on-screen heroes drink over and over and over again. Hit up the comments section to let us know what drinks of choice we missed. Read More

The Official PorchDrinking.com Presidential Debate Drinking Game

October 3, 2012 |

Tonight, the two men running for President will go head-to-head in Denver for a televised debate on domestic policy issues. According to the latest popular vote polling, it’s a dead heat (although according to the electoral vote, it’s already a landslide). While this campaign is not as exciting as the “Hope-And-Change,” “I-Can-See-Russia-From-My-House” quotes of 2008, the presidential debate tonight promises us a unique opportunity to see democracy in action and discern the ideological rifts between our candidates and our nation.

TV Is Back! … I Didn’t Say Good TV.

This is actually my scaled back fall TV preview. I was lucky enough to participate in PorchDrinking.com’s first ever Google hangout, where our pop culture team discussed fall TV at length. I’ll spare you most of the things we said there and end my plug with that.

Fantasy Draft List

August 29, 2012 |

Armchair quarterbacks, it’s time to move your recliners to the porch. Nothing goes better together than football and beer —for proof, look no further than the advertisements during any football game ever. And since there’s no shame in having a cold one during a game, it stands to reason that you might as well drink beer during fantasy football too, right?
