Event Recap | Beers Made By Walking 2017

October 18, 2017 | Avg. Reading Time: 3 min

For the last six years, Beers Made By Walking has offered beer drinkers in a select few cities an opportunity to explore a collection of one-off beers inspired by local nature and urban walks. This program began back in 2011 and over time has worked with 150 different breweries across six states.

This year, Beers Made By Walking hosted its annual Denver event at the Denver Museum of Nature & Science, who was also the beneficiary of the proceeds from the event. Essentially, attendees got to feel like they were Ben Stiller in his Night at the Museum movies but with the added bonus of 33 breweries also hanging out for the evening.

What’s great about Odell Brewing Company (besides the fact that it has an employee stock ownership plan) is the brewery’s ability to produce high quality beer no matter the style or the size of production. From the Fort Collins brewery’s core line up, to one-off specialty taproom ales, to its Cellar Series barrel-aged beers, I always know that an Odell beer is going to deliver.

San Francisco-based Almanac Beer Company emphasizes sustainable farming practices through using locally-grown grains, fruits and herbs from some of the agricultural hubs of Northern California. The brewery’s Farm to Barrel series speaks to Almanac’s specialization in beers brewed with local terroir from neighboring California farms. What is surely a tribute to this practice, Almanac’s fruit-forward beers consistently burst with depth and flavor. This showcase profiles one of Almanac’s most recent award-winning beers. Read More

Stem Ciders | Off-Dry Apple Cider

February 6, 2017 | Avg. Reading Time: 3 min

Here at PorchDrinking, while beer will always be our first love, we also enjoy occasionally dabbling in other forms of imbibing such as bourbon, rum, mead and cider. And there is one Colorado cidery that has risen to prominence in recent years, it’s Stem Ciders in Denver’s River North Art District. Lucky enough for me, one of my closest friends is the assistant cider maker over at Stem Ciders and she was willing to talk to me about the cidery’s newest offering.

12 Beers of Christmas | Vision Quest Brewery | The Magical Liopleurodon

December 15, 2016 | Avg. Reading Time: 3 min

7.0% ABV

Who doesn’t love a good holiday beer?! For myself specifically, I look for something either reminiscent of hot cocoa or coffee this time of the year. I want a drink that makes me feel like I could hold it close, like a recently opened present, while sitting in front of the fire surrounded by loved ones, (who are obviously all in matching pajamas) on Christmas morning. Yes, my holiday beer must be a brew with cozy flavors I can sip slowly, while watching my younger sister Jamie unwrap the EXACT Furby that I wanted (no, wait, sorry that was in 1998).

Event Recap | Mainline Ale House & Odell Brewing Co. Fall Beer Dinner

September 30, 2016 | Avg. Reading Time: 3 min

Two beer-centric establishments of Fort Collins, Mainline Ale House and Odell Brewing Company, joined forces last Friday night in bringing roughly forty attendees an unforgettable four course beer dinner. At the start of dinner, Mainline’s Executive Chef Justin Burdick really emphasized sourcing local ingredients (shout out to the Fort Collins Farmers Market) and fall-forward flavors. The Mainline kitchen did not disappoint in delivering four thoughtful, tasty pairings to accompany always-solid Odell beers. Moreover, after Chef Justin discussed each dish, Odell beer representative Alex Cousins presented the story, style, and flavors of the beers during each respective course. Overall, Mainline’s motto, “A passion for beer and food you can taste,” could not have been more evident over the course of this event!

Last month, PorchDrinking reported on the federal lawsuit that the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina filed against Anheuser-Busch and R.A. Jeffreys, a local A-B distribution company for using the Tribe’s logo and slogan in Bud Light ads without permission. The ads incorporated the Tribe’s name, official tribal seal and its tribal slogan phrase “Heritage, Pride & Strength.” Notably, after the Tribe filed suit, it came to light that A-B had no knowledge that R.A. Jeffreys made and subsequently displayed these ads. Read More

The Lumbee Tribe Sues Anheuser-Busch & Distributor

June 27, 2016 | Avg. Reading Time: 4 min

An unfortunate reality for breweries these days (albeit great for litigators), is that copyright and intellectual property disputes in the beer world are quite common. However, it is not often that a sovereign Indian nation finds itself embroiled in a trademark infringement battle against a beverage distributor and America’s biggest brewery for using its tribal symbols and official tribal slogan.

Ultimate 6er | Parks & Recreation Part 2

June 1, 2016 | Avg. Reading Time: 4 min

NBC’s Parks & Recreation is one of my favorite TV shows. Like any devoted Parks & Rec fan, season seven was a dark time for me, as I knew it meant that this hilarious show was coming to its unimaginable end. However, once Hannah Carlson debuted her wildly-popular Parks & Rec Ultimate 6er article in April [Ludgate], I finally felt ready to move on from my despair and celebrate my love for this show. Since there are so many great characters, I decided to feature six additional Pawnee favorites, and have this Ultimate 6er post pick up right where Hannah left off. Read More
