Beer Showcases

PD’s own dissect beer. Leave the pretentiousness on the curb.

Wyndridge Farm | Crafty Cider

November 29, 2017 |

Wyndridge Farm does many things, but it truly does cider well.

The cidery, brewery, farm, restaurant, hard-soda maker and event space is in York County Pennsylvania, which borders Maryland and is straight north of Baltimore, south of Harrisburg and west of Lancaster. Wyndridge distributes throughout the East coast, and their Crafty Cider was a surprising addition to a supermarket in Northern Virginia. Read More

Fiction Beer Company | Madame Psychosis

November 28, 2017 |

At this point, it’s pretty clear that the New England IPA style is not just limited to beer makers in New England. From coast to coast, beer drinkers are seeing … Read More

Brewmeister | Snake Venom

November 27, 2017 | 1

While there are an incredible abundance of existing and soon-to-come craft releases in the U.S., Brewmeister‘s Snake Venom is a rare sight in these parts. I recently had the honor of getting to try this beer that tops many beer drinkers lists. These aren’t charts for flavor and overall ingenuity, but simply because of the fact that it will knock you off your feet. At a staggering 67.5% ABV this fortified monster has made its rounds on the web as a viral hit, enticing the alcoholics of America with a great name and the promise that you won’t remember tomorrow. However, the real challenge isn’t staying alive after consumption, but rather just getting a hold of this beer in the U.S. in the first place.

Founders Brewing | Canadian Breakfast Stout

November 24, 2017 |

Few things evoke childlike joy from fully-grown adults like old video games and rare beer. Recently I got to combine the two when I played Super Smash Bros with my friend while sipping on the 2017 version of Founders Brewing’s famed Canadian Breakfast Stout. As I sat there with my N64 controller in hand, taking in the maple syrup-laced decadence that has garnered this imperial stout high praise and a fervent following over the years, I fully understood why CBS had gained its “whale” status.

Woodland Empire Ale Craft | Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheeple?

November 23, 2017 |

If you have yet to try a craft beer from Boise, you may be in good company. However, Boise, population 205,000, is a small city only 5.5 hours from the lush hop fields of Yakima Valley and less than an hour from the Oregon border. Also, let’s not forget that Idaho is also officially part of what we consider the “Pacific Northwest” region of the United States. Hence, when you’re a brewery that’s in direct competition with the tasty beers of Washington and Oregon, you have no choice but to bring your A-game and that’s what Woodland Empire Ale Craft does with its “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheeple?”

Odd13 Brewing | n00b

November 22, 2017 |

I’m that guy. I’ve been him for a long time now. I’ve known it for a long time, but didn’t care. I went with it. I’m the guy who no matter what always just wants to try the NEW beer. It’ll be sitting right next to a beer that I know I love and have even ranted and raved about to my friends. And yet, I can’t help myself; I grab the shiny new beer next to it on the shelf. I’ve never really had a go-to beer.

That has finally changed.

Põhjala Brewery | Öö Imperial Baltic Porter

November 21, 2017 |

If someone asked me about the Estonian craft beer scene a month ago, I probably would’ve shrugged my shoulders and guessed there wasn’t one. I would have been wrong. I’ve now had three beers from Põhjala Brewery (pronounced Poh-ya-la) out of Tallinn, Estonia and this Öö Imperial Baltic Porter is so far, my favorite. Read More

Epic Brewing Company | Triple Barrel Big Bad Baptist

November 20, 2017 |

Few words excite beer lovers as much as the word “rare”. The thought electrifies basic hunting instincts into a frenzied FoMO path to liquid bliss. Last year, when Epic Brewing Company announced its plans to release two very special versions of their barrel-aged stout Big Bad Baptist, we stood up and took notice. Released alongside the already well-established original Big Bad Baptist, was the Mexican coffee-inspired Big Bad Baptista and the sensory enticing Double Barrel Big Bad Baptist. Needless to say, many of our old trading friends dropped us a quick “ISO” once they caught wind of it. Read More

MadTree Brewing | Thundersnow

November 17, 2017 |

By definition, Thundersnow, also known as a winter thunderstorm or a thundersnowstorm, is an unusual kind of thunderstorm with snow falling as the primary precipitation instead of rain.

I’ve never witnessed Thundersnow in my area but I have witnessed the frenzy of people excited about the release of MadTree Brewing’s Thundersnow.

Engine House No. 9 | Frambuesa Moka

November 16, 2017 |

Sour styles in any incarnation were my beers of the summer and although I love stouts, the transition into the colder, rainier reality of stout season has been harsh this year. That’s why I was so excited to find the perfect middle ground: the Frambuesa Moka, a tart, dark potion from Engine House No. 9 in Tacoma, Washington. Read More

Night Shift Brewing | Bennington

November 15, 2017 |

This year, the crisp, fall air I know and love has struggled to find its way to Massachusetts. Drinking saisons and tropical IPAs seemed suitable well into October. But now that the crisp air is starting to steadily settle in, I can feel free to indulge in stouts. The Massachusetts-native Night Shift Brewing knows fall well, and it’s certainly reflected in their beers. Read More

Crow Hop Brewing | Knee Knocker Porter

November 14, 2017 |

When you think of a porter, the first thing to come to mind is often the dark color and rich texture it has while sitting in its glass. You may wonder what exactly the difference is between a porter and a stout and why the heck they have to look so similar. Maybe the sheer excitement of a beer in front of you means you don’t think about any of these things, and that is probably the most reasonable reaction. If you’re looking for a traditional porter, turn back now. If you’re looking for one that will surprise your taste buds, Crow Hop Brewing‘s Knee Knocker is where you should turn. Read More

Pizza Boy Brewing Company | Sunny Side Up

November 13, 2017 |

If you’re anything like me, you believe that it’s always stout season. Of course, there seem to be times that are more appropriate than others for enjoying a stout. Despite spending many years of my life here, I am still surprised by how cold it gets. It happens literally every year, yet I’m still shocked every time. “I can’t believe it’s so cold outside.” I live in a state where we are fortunate enough to experience all four stout seasons. So, as we approach the cold season here on the east coast, it’s almost comforting to find such an exceptional dark roasted beverage to relish in. That beverage is Pizza Boy Brewing Company‘s Sunny Side Up.

Tombstone Brewing Co. | Little Baby Wyatt

November 10, 2017 |

Welcome to the Wild West. No town represents that way of life better than the town too tough to die—Tombstone, Arizona. Many people know this town as one big tourist attraction, where you feel like you’ve gone back in time into the heart of the Old West. Nevertheless, though it is a rustic and historic town, the city is also home to one of the state’s top breweries—Tombstone Brewing Company. Tombstone has only been open a little over a year, but they have won over the taste buds of craft beer drinkers around the state, and with beers such as Little Baby Wyatt, the brewery is also appealing to the locals who usually prefer macro-brews.

Bent Paddle Brewing Co. | Lollygagger Pale Ale

November 8, 2017 |

In Minnesota, the phrase “heading up north to the cabin” and its many variations are uttered constantly between June and September. Most families pack up and drive to a cabin two to five hours away from the Twin Cities. My family takes this concept just a bit further, though – eight hours north farther, into Canada. While on our way, we pass through Duluth, Minnesota, the home of Bent Paddle Brewing Company. My retired parents now spend May through September in Northwestern Ontario and a six-pack or two of Bent Paddle’s Lollygagger Pale Ale is always in the fridge while my siblings and I visit during the last week of July.

Surly Brewing Co. | Abrasive Ale

November 7, 2017 |

As the hunt continues for the haziest and fruitiest New England IPA, it was nice to crack open Surly Brewing’s 2017 batch of Abrasive. A double IPA that says no to haze and fruit, but instead hits you with hops and malt. You know, the way an IPA used to be.

Angel City Brewery | Zero Flocs Given

November 6, 2017 |

Here in Los Angeles, I tend to get a bit of season-envy this time of year. My friends in the Midwest and East Coast are bragging about sweater weather, while I’m still cranking the AC in my car and wearing flip-flops on the weekends. Having nearly 300 days of sunny weather is great, but sometimes I like a bit of cloudy weather. Angel City Brewery likes things a little cloudy, too. Hence their new Zero Flocs Given Hazy IPA.
