Southern Brewing Co. | Southern Woodpile: Imperial Stout Aged in Bourbon Barrels

November 9, 2016 |

Finally, the season is changing. The days are shorter, the nights are cooler, and the leaves are making a quick exit from the trees. I mean let’s face it… this was an unending summer. It’s all anyone talked about. We needed low alcohol brews that were loaded with fruit, because if we drank anything heavier, we may have literally died. Or melted. Or burst into flames. It was seriously hot out there.

Brew Gentlemen | DoubleMex

November 8, 2016 |

Style: Barrel Aged Imperial Stout | ABV: 9.9%

Brew Gentlemen’s bottle release of DoubleMex took place on Saturday, September 17, 2016. This was my first ever bottle release that I have attended so I made sure I did my research on the event. I followed BG on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and even signed up for their newsletter (pssh stalk much?!) just so that I could stay current with the brewery.

Jim Furman used to work at a nuclear safety test facility for the Nuclear Power Institute of China (NPIC) in Chengdu in the Szechuan Province. Now Jim is the proud owner and head brewer of Black Hammer Brewing (BHB). True story. While Jim is brewing, you will often find Growler, Jim’s dog, hanging out in the tap room greeting customers. BHB opened just over a year ago in the SOMA neighborhood of San Francisco and is having great success. Their mission is twofold: Lager without limits! and Malt Forward! Sparkle Pony is one beer so popular that it pays the rent.

The Unknown Brewing Co. | Vehopciraptor Triple IPA

November 4, 2016 | 1

Only weeks ago, The Unknown Brewing Co. released Vehopciraptor, a triple IPA straight out of the Cretaceous Period. This is the third time the Charlotte, North Carolina based brewery has released Vehopciraptor into the wild, but the first time it has done so as a 90 IBU triple IPA. One of The Unknown Brewing Co.’s most popular beers, with good reason, it is so incredibly well-balanced, yet bold, that some of us wondered if its really even a triple IPA.

BadWolf Brewing Company | Session Brown

ABV: 4.7% | IBU: 29

It’s cliché but sometimes you want a beer that you can drink in the fall while wearing a flannel. Maybe you’re wearing brown boots, maybe you’re sitting on a haystack or maybe you’re just sitting on your back porch on a sunny, somewhat warm afternoon.

BrewDog | Restorative Beverage for Invalids & Convalescents

November 2, 2016 |

ABV: 8.5% | IBU: ALOT

BrewDog continues to impress me with their beers. In fact, every one I’ve had thus far has been excellent even with styles I don’t normally go for, such as lagers. They also appear to be complete lunatics, which I appreciate.

Grapefruit Season!

As we prepare for turkey day, serious football, and the dreaded holiday shopping season winter warmer and Christmas beers are starting to appear on shelves. Not everyone is ready to slap on the sweaters and hunker down for the bitter cold. Some of us are looking for something different something counter to the spice and malt offerings of the season. Schlafly Beer | Bonfire Box (Variety Pack)

October 31, 2016 |

When hockey season starts in St. Louis, this is how I spend many a night:  I slip on my Blues ski cap to protect my balded head, throw on my jersey, bring out the big screen and connect it to my DirectTV Genie, light a fire and drink beer while watching the Blues. Cold beer in the backyard by the fire is one of life’s true pleasures. But until now, drinking by the fire could be a random affair. Not anymore thanks to Schlafly Beer Bonfire Box — beers designed for campfire-style drinking.

Great Lakes Brewing Company | Oktoberfest

October 31, 2016 |

ABV: 6.5% | IBU: 20

On Tuesday October 25, 2016, the Cleveland Cavaliers opened their season by raising their championship banner and receiving their championship rings for winning the 2016 NBA Finals. No more than 100 yards away at Progressive Field, the Cleveland Indians began the 2016 World Series against the Chicago Cubs – and no more than two years ago that would have been the longest of long shots in baseball (aside from a Mike Napoli rocket over the left field wall). Yet here we are, and frankly it’s a helluva time to be in The Land. The feeling in the city is exciting and electric as we embark on an unprecedented time in Cleveland sports history (except for the Browns – the Browns are horrendous, as is tradition). Not even the most biting breeze off of Lake Erie can temper the mood around town.

Renegade Brewing Company | Pancakes Maple Porter

October 28, 2016 |

ABV: 6%

Every year around mid-September the leaves start to change color, the air gets a crisp nip, and the shelves of your local liquor store turn bright orange with the annual onslaught of pumpkin beers. There’s nothing wrong with that; these beers have their place in my belly and my heart. But, there’s only so much gourd one man can consume. If only there were a pumpkin-free beer built for the fall. Enter: Renegade Brewing Company’s Pancakes Maple Porter.

It’s no secret: We like IPAs in Seattle. In fact, we really, really, like IPAs in Seattle.

And it’s no wonder. Lucky for us Seattle folk, we are in close proximity to the Yakima Valley, which produces nearly 77% of the country’s hop crop. You read that right. 77%.

Epic Brewing Company | Oak & Orchard: Syrah

October 26, 2016 |

I remember attending the celebration for Epic Brewing‘s first dive into sours in June 2015, including waxing my own bottle of Sour Brainless on Peaches, free peach ice cream and even fire-roasted peaches. The beer was worth the hype and I was immediately excited to see how this souring program would grow.

Sitting on a busy part of Federal Boulevard in southwest Denver is a small noodle house. Inside this small noodle house sits dishes of soup dumplings, amazingly good pot stickers and other Chinese-Laotian dishes that recently made Lao Wang Noodle House #16 on The 50 Best Restaurants in Denver list, according to Zagat. What is most important, however, is the mouth-quenching Lao Wang Lager that is partnered with the food.

Vincent Price warned us all, but nothing can stop Avery Brewing from unleashing The Beast upon the beer-drinking world. It is big. It is bold. It is even a little frightening. Lagunitas Brewing Company | Wilco Tango Foxtrot

It’s a shock that it’s already October and fall is officially here. The summer was a blur and it seems like Christmas is already right around the corner. Yet, we’re at that awkward point in the year when it often still feels like summer despite the fact that we can officially say it’s fall and crack open those seasonal brews. So, is it still cool to enjoy a hoppy IPA or crisp, citrusy shandy, or are we resigned to force in those maltier, more robust ales and stouts? There isn’t really a satisfying mix of the two to help bridge the gap. That is until now — Lagunitas Brewing Company has introduced to the world its new Wilco Tango Foxtrot.

Cloudburst Brewing | Remember the Maine Smoked Pumpkin Porter

October 19, 2016 |

ABV: 5.1%

As our own writers have demonstrated, pumpkin beers can be a divisive topic. But despite the controversy attached to this particular category of beer, West Seattle’s beloved beer bar and bottle shop The Beer Junction has devoted an entire week to celebrating this type of beverage with an event titled Pumpkin Junction 2016. This event features 30 taps devoted solely to pumpkin beers and ciders for eight straight days (Oct. 15-23). I attended the Pumpkin Junction on opening day and chose Cloudburst Brewing’s Remember the Maine Smoked Pumpkin Porter as my inaugural pumpkin beer for the season. The Beer Junction’s promise of pumpkin did not disappoint.

Mockery Brewing | Party at the Moontower

ABV: 10.6% | IBU: 16

Winter may be coming, but fall is here and that can only mean one thing: Porter season. Cold weather and dark beers go hand-in-hand like peanut butter and jelly. As the fall colors quickly fade and trees begin to wilt their leaves I think back to my childhood – begrudgingly raking up leaves only to have my little brother jump in the pile and force me to rake them all up again. Needless to say, I live in the city now and raking up leaves is a thing of the past. My fall days now comprise of fall hikes to view the vibrant aspens billowing in the wind, jeering at the pumpkin spice Pringles at the grocery store, and enjoying a tasty porter while I wait for my beard to grow in my flannel shirt and knit cap. Yeah, I’m that guy.

The Veil Brewing Company | Child Support

October 17, 2016 |

ABV: 4.5% | IBU: 25

In my experience, there has been no brewery to grow faster from its amazing quality and devoted fanbase than The Veil Brewing Company. Thirsty audiences would flock across the state to Richmond every Tuesday to get their hands on The Veil’s collection of canned jewels. Those of us familiar with the East Coast trading scene would see The Veil’s collection of juicy, New England-style IPAs to give them a breakthrough of success on the level of Lawson’s Finest Liquids in Vermont or Tree House Brewing Company in Massachusetts.
