Coney Island Brewing Company | Mermaid Pilsner
July 27, 2015 | Danny King
There are few New York cultural institutions that have survived the Disneyfication of the city better then Coney Island. The injection of the money has created some updated facilities and relatively cleaner beaches, the classic Coney Island experience is still available for those willing to take the long train ride down to the bottom of Brooklyn. Whether you are looking to take advantage of the sun and swimming, gorge yourself on every carnival-type fare available, or scream your head off on roller coasters old and new, Coney Island has it all. Coney Island Brewing company has captured all of these into a nice little pilsner perfect for the summer that celebrates the emblem of the area’s greatest parade, Mermaid Pilsner.

Ultimate 6er | Summer Seasonal Beers
July 23, 2015 | Emily Mollineaux 1I was brutally reminded yesterday that it’s almost August. Not only did that mean rent was due, but summer is flying by fast. If you live in the Midwest, you know that means you are soon going to be slapped in the face with 4-8 months of winter, depression and an overall desperation for spring to arrive to save you from the depths of Hell.
Instead of focusing on all that nonsense, I will try to embrace the rest of the summer, and take advantage of all the great seasonal summer beers, some you can still buy all year round, and some you can’t. Either way, any of these beers will add a little sparkle to the remaining summer.

Ultimate 6er | National Picnic Month
July 22, 2015 | Niel StenderIt seems that the list of “holidays” has grown to epic proportions of nonsense these days. I’m not talking about legitimate fiestas that trace their roots to ancient pagan traditions like Easter, Halloween and Groundhog Day. I’m talking about those Instagram hashtag holidays like Sibling Day, No Pants Day and National Cheeseburger Day. Full disclosure, I am a card carrying celebrant of these three festivals but surely In-n-Out had a hand in creating at least one of them.

Barrels & Bottles Brewery | the Big LeBEERski
July 22, 2015 | Holly Gerard
I’ve seen a trend in craft beer lately that includes both a.) coffee and b.) “golden” stouts. I had yet to try a beer combining both of these trendy concepts — then I did at Barrels & Bottles Brewery last night! I never seem to get over being blown away by the fact that a beer the color of an ale or IPA could taste so roasty and chocolatey, as one the color of a traditional stout does, but that is just the case with the Big LeBEERski. Coco Loco Porter | NoDa Brewing
July 21, 2015 | Jess Baker
6.2% ABV
Newly-anointed craft beer drinkers sometimes think there are rules as to when you can drink a beer: Quads are only for Christmas! No zingy hefes if snow is on the ground!
I’m here to tell you there are no rules. You can drink whatever you want, no matter what time of year — and it’s always the season for Coco Loco Porter from Charlotte’s NoDa Brewing.

Five Tips To Score 2015 GABF Tickets
July 20, 2015 | Chris Day
The upcoming 2015 Great American Beer Festival promises to be bigger than ever. A predicted 60,000 craft beer fans will swarm to Denver this September to sample 3,500+ beers from 800+ breweries. Will you be one of them? GABF is more than two months away, but the notoriously narrow window of ticket availability is rapidly approaching. We want to see you there, so please follow our guide to increase your chances of scoring tickets to the country’s biggest and baddest beer fest.
Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales | Persimmon Ship
July 20, 2015 | Mike Wronski
5% ABV
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but summer is about halfway over. I only bring it up because it’s time to carpe the summer diem! All those things you said you wanted to accomplish this summer, well, time to get after it. Including that trip to the park for some good old-fashioned outdoor drinking you’ve been putting off, probably because it’s been raining so damn much (sorry California, we’d LOVE to send some your way…). If you’re a Chicagoan, that means a trip to Ravinia or checking out one of the countless free shows at the Pritzker Pavilion in Millennium Park (check out the summer film series!).
And while wine seems to be the drink of choice at these events, a collaboration beer between two of the Midwest’s sour powerhouses could easily convince wine drinkers to make a switch. Michigan’s Jolly Pumpkin teamed up with Indiana’s Upland to brew a Persimmon and Dragonfuit infused wild ale that ends up being very reminiscent of a sparkling white wine. But of course, there’s plenty of nuance for beer drinkers to love too. Read More
True Hero: Alex C. Teves
July 19, 2015 | Scott Davidson
I’m hesitant to write this, but in order to accurately tell his story, I have to tell mine.
I grew up in Aurora, Colorado, I was born and raised here, and I graduated with the same kids I met on the first day of school. Our city is a large-small town, meaning that everyone knows everyone. Even when I moved to college eight hours away in Durango; Aurora came with me.
On July 20th 2012 at 7:00 am I woke up and checked my phone to a report that a gunman had killed 12 people the night before. My heart sank. The shooting happened at Century 16, a theater I had gone to since the day it was built. I knew exactly where theater nine was. I could see it in my head. I immediately responded like most would, by scanning the internet for details about what had happened. The media was reporting that someone had opened fire, people were dead, and there weren’t a lot of details as to why. Soon more information came out and it all clicked. This was an attack on Aurora. This was an attack on my neighborhood, my high school, and my friends.

Sustainability on the New Breckenridge Brewery Campus
July 17, 2015 | Brian Phipps
Resources are finite. Protecting future materials is imperative. Sustainability is integral to successful business.
These are lessons I consistently hear from business leaders in all industries, including craft beer. The brewing industry is consistently innovative and creative with its sustainability initiatives to ensure water, energy, and raw materials are obtainable for the future.
In June, Breckenridge Brewery opened its new twelve-acre campus in Littleton, Colorado, after being headquartered on Kalamath St. in Denver for 20 years. The new facility allows the brewery to increase production for future growth. Read More
