Rhinegeist Brewery | Citra Tooth Tiger
May 7, 2014 | Kyle Buchanan 1Rhinegeist Brewery – Citra Tooth Tiger Imperial IPA
9% ABV
95 IBU
Today’s breweres have taken beer, above and beyond being just beer. In some cases this has evolved to near obsession, especially when it involves tracking down a rare brew. Sometimes keeping tabs on these fleeting offerings can be difficult, but the challenge just adds to the overall experience – that is if you can manage to actually land a bottle or two. Another trend that has helped provide a positive impact on the craft beer scene is taking an already great beer and enhancing it with the addition of one or two more ingredients. Yeti Imperial Stout, by Great Divide Brewing Co., is a great example of this – oatmeal, chocolate, espresso, oak aged, barrel aged.
HalfCut Beer Cafe
May 6, 2014 | Spencer MapesHalfCut beer cafe opened it’s doors to a sunny April 18th afternoon. What a Good Friday that was! Specializing in local Cincinnati and Ohio beer, as well as crafts from all over the country, HalfCut is a new brew hub in Over The Rhine. Having a full house for their opening day, they knocked it out of the park. The walk-up bottle window was open, the bar was fully staffed, and they had great, friendly service. It was wall to wall with thirsty customers that had their thirst quenched with a variety of great beer to choose from. With 12 tap handles, there was a little something for everyone.

Weekly Growler Fill | National Beer News Roundup
May 5, 2014 | Chelsea Mitchell 1A lot news has occurred in the beer world in the recent past. Some good, some bad. I’ve put together the weekly growler so you can catch up on anything you missed. I can’t tell what I want to do more right now: grill a steak or conduct a drinking experiment. Maybe I’ll do both.

Milwaukee’s Stein & Dine | A Peek into the City of Festivals
May 2, 2014 | Lindsay SnyderFor much of the nation, I imagine Milwaukee brings to mind Schlitz, Miller, Milwaukee’s Best – all of the staple beers that glare menacingly from neon signs above shady bars. As a Madison, Wisconsin resident and Milwaukee skeptic, I’d like to descend from my high horse and paint a different picture of this vibrant lakeside city, fondly referred to as the City of Festivals, through a Festival of (what else?) Beer.

Kentucky Derby Beers
May 1, 2014 | Tristan Chan 3The Kentucky Derby may be all about mint juleps and bourbon, but there’s room for beer as well. In honor of this weekend’s run for the roses we wanted to highlight a few Kentucky Derby Beers worthy of consumption during race day. These beers are a showcase of the tremendous growth of craft beer in my home state of Kentucky. If you’re in the Bluegrass state for the Derby, be sure to drop in to one of these talented breweries or pick some up from your local liquor store. Read More

4 Hands Brewing | Contact High
April 30, 2014 | Niel Stender4 Hands Brewing
ABV: 5%
IBU: 28
Style: Wheat Ale
The name of this beer, Contact High, had me looking. The trippy label design had me reaching. And the 80 degree weather had me buying this brew with promises of a bright, warm weather feel. On top of that, it seems to be for sale everywhere PLUS my brother was in town for a visit. Noticing a six pack on display, he excitedly pulled me over while nodding his head up and down and smiling like The Joker. Who am I to refuse? Read More

Cooking with Beer | Fried Beer-Battered Avocados
April 27, 2014 | Chelsea Mitchell
Here it goes again, another recipe about Cooking with Beer. This one should really be called ‘The Trials and Tribulations of Frying Beer-Battered Avocados’ or ‘Kitchen Failures: Avocado Edition.’ Luckily, the saying held true and the third time really was a charm. Frying avocados sounded amazing but figuring out the right way to accomplish the task wasn’t easy. The first time around, the batter was too thick and I forgot some ingredients (so don’t drink too much before cooking). The second attempt, the batter still didn’t seem right and the avocados turned to mush. The third time, well, it was perfection. The batter was crispy and full of flavorful hops from the Upslope IPA. The avocados turned out to be just the right texture. These little crunchy green nuggets tasted great — probably even better to me since I finally conquered what seemed to be an impossible mission. But when you think about it, how could you ever go wrong when beer and avocados are involved?
