Cucumber Beer – The Ultimate 6er

June 19, 2013 |

Searching for that refreshing brew this summer can be overwhelming while I stare giddily at the bottle shop coolers. I scan and scan until I find something that can pack in the flavor but also has a refreshing finish. I stay calm and I don’t get ruffled. I know I have found what I am looking for. It’s a Cucumber Cream Ale from Twisted Pine Brewery and it’s just one of the many green gourd guzzlers out in the market place this summer. To stay as cool as a cucumber this summer, walk with me through a myriad of tasty barley pops that pay homage to the cuke. To the cucumber beer patch we go . . .

Hunt for Sasquatch!: The Colorado Way

June 18, 2013 |

Two weeks ago my wife and I finished an epic 10 day roadtrip which involved 2600 miles, 6 states, 28 concerts, 6 breweries and sampling 38 different brews.
Sasquatch! Music Fest this year had a ridiculous lineup and was the main reason of our roadtrip, but we managed to make the most of our 40+ hours of driving.
Here’s a recap of how we made the most of the route, and some tips on Sasquatch! Music Fest.

Green Flash Brewing Co. | Palate Wrecker

June 18, 2013 |

While I must admit that I am not the type to usually fall for big names that make large boasts, especially when it comes to hops and bitterness, breweries like Green Flash are the exception. Hailing from southern California in San Diego, hop heads all over recognize the great quality and diversity of IPA in their regular rotation. For today’s showcase, I hoppily introduce Palate Wrecker….and it is no misnomer. Read More

Bell’s Brewery’s Third Coast Old Ale

June 17, 2013 |

10.2% ABV

Pale ales, wheat beers, IPAs, pilsners, kolsches, lagers, everybody can’t wait to get their summer on. Give me something light, give me something easy to drink, give me something refreshing. No. With a picturesque wintry Michigan day gracing the label, I grabbed a hanger-on from those lost days of winter, and I can’t believe that this one hung around this long (as it is usually a winter/spring beer). Not on the hottest of days, but on a rainy weekend day or a mild summer night with a fire blazing in the outdoor pit, I often look to the things that comforted me back when seasonal depression had me in its menacing grip. However, they say that Bell’s Brewery’s Third Coast Old Ale ages well and never goes bad, so a few months later than usual may have made it all the better. Read More

Beerstagram 6/7- 6/14

June 14, 2013 |

What do this week’s Beerstagrams have in common? No not just beer instagrams

They’re all outside. And thank goodness. It’s that time of year- when good beer can come with you anywhere- A brewery patio, front lawn, river, or of course the occasional porch. This week is heavy on the Colorado beers with appearances by Great Divide’s Hoss Rye Lager and New Belgium’s Ranger IPA. But we did discover that the perfect river brew was Schlafly’s Pale Ale, even when the make-shift cooler didn’t keep it at an ideal temperature. Here’s to another weekend in the great outdoors!

Homebrewing: Make a Hop Statement

June 13, 2013 |

Trying to keep up with the ever-popular double, triple and imperial IPAs is no easy task. It seems like every time you turn around some brewery is adding a new face-melting IPA to their line-up or collecting accolades for an exceptional year-rounder. So how do these breweries impart those incredible hop flavors and aromas in their beer and what can I do to make a better homebrewed IPA? In this weeks’ homebrew column, Homebrewing: Make a Hop Statement I’m going to share some of my favorite hopping techniques and the reasons behind using them.

Will Travel for Beer

June 12, 2013 |

This summer is busy with travel for me. I live and work in Colorado, but my out of state adventures will have brought me to San Diego, Minneapolis, Maine, Montana, Portland (Oregon), and Seattle by the end of the summer. I do not normally travel this much in one season, but sometimes life just keeps you busy like that. While I don’t look forward to being gone so often, I am looking forward to my new favorite hobby in a new place-drink the local beer.

Jack’s Abby Brewing | Leisure Time Lager

June 12, 2013 |

By the time this weekend comes around I will have written close to 5,000 words on beer, interviewed the head of the “best brewery in the world” [1], driven over 500 miles visiting breweries, and taken more pictures of pints than I care to admit. I love doing this, but even the best things can be exhausting, especially since those numbers only scratch the surface of how much thought I try to put into every post and that is not easily quantifiable. Yes, it’s beer and beer is great, but it’s also writing and writing is hard. At the end of the “day,” which seldom is only 24 hours, my brain needs a quick reboot. After years of highly scientific research, I’ve come up with the perfect reset button: a good, long run and a bottle of the adequately named Jack’s Abby’s Leisure Time Lager.

Great River Brewery – Dirty Blonde

I went to the Burning Can Festival (not to be confused with Burning Man) in Lyons, Colorado last weekend. For those who aren’t familiar, this is a full-day event with a 5K run in the morning so you don’t feel guilty about developing a large beer belly by nighttime. The rest of the day is spent … you guessed it … consuming beer. The festival features beer tasters from more than 30 breweries all across the US.
