Porch Swing Editorials | Pumpkin Beers Arms Race

September 2, 2014 |

We built this site based on the premise that positivity is the best way to promote the craft beer industry. However, I also feel it is our responsibility to constructively address some of the alarming issues, trends, or behaviors within the craft beer community. This recurring post won’t always take a negative stance on things, but rather I’d like for this to help start the conversation, and I’d love to hear your views in the comments section below. So have a seat with me on the Porch Swing and lets dive into some of the bigger ideas swirling around the craft beer world at the moment. Read More

DryHop Brewers Berliner Weiss Release

August 29, 2014 |

The Berliner Weiss is an old German style whose origins are somewhat mysterious. Some say it is a derivative of an old wheat and barley ale brewed in Halberstadt, while others say it was brought to Berlin by the Protestant French Huguenots in the late 17th century. Still others cite relics that prove it was first invented in Berlin in 1572. Whatever the story, Berliner Weisse beers are delicious. They are tart, sour, and bright, with champagne-like carbonation, and are generally offered with a choice of fruit flavorings.

Event Recap| Chive Fest Denver

August 26, 2014 |

Killer music, more tank tops than Justin Bieber’s wardrobe, Chivettes, KCCO Beers, and Blow up dolls, that pretty much sums up Chive Fest Denver. Our preview of the event was astonishingly accurate save for the prediction of the aforementioned blowup dolls but hey we’re all inclined to oversight once and a while.

Drink Locally. Be Pretentious Globally: My Interview with Adam Cayton-Holland

August 21, 2014 |

Adam Cayton-Holland, one third of Denver’s the World’s best comedy show The Grawlix, has been on one hell of a run. After performing on Conan and The Pete Holmes Show, Adam followed it up with an appearance on @midnight and throwing the first pitch out at a Colorado Rockies game. Adam has been creating his own path to success by staying in his hometown, the beer mecca of Denver, instead of following the traditional path for entertainers: moving to either New York or LA.

Adam took some time out of his busy schedule writing, podcasting, and planning the upcoming High Plains Comedy Festival (starring T.J. Miller, Kumail Nanjiani, Pete Holmes and dozens more) to discuss the beer scene in Denver, brew options on the road and much more.

Oak Park Micro Brew Review

Oak Park Micro Brew Review

Downtown Oak Park, Illinois is a perfect place to host a beer festival. The quaint, shady brick streets are lined with sidewalk cafés, pubs, and specialty shops, and the area is easily accessible by several public transportation routes. In fact, the train station acts as the geographical center of the festival. Started in 2008, the Oak Park Micro Brew Review is the largest zero-waste craft beer festival in the Midwest. Read More

Save The Ales | A Toast to the Environment

August 14, 2014 | 1

Do you ever catch yourself at breweries gazing up at the towering steel brew tanks and wondering about water conservation? When a beer you love is released in cans, do you get a little giddy thinking about the outdoor adventures it can now safely accompany you on? Does a farmhouse ale taste the slightest bit more refreshing when you find that the ingredients came from a nearby farm? We could keep going with the questions on sustainability awareness in the craft beer industry, but we’ll stop for time’s sake.

Festival Recap | Fermentation Festival 2014

August 13, 2014 |

Fermentation is defined as “the chemical breakdown of a substance by bacteria, yeasts, or other microorganisms, typically involving effervescence and the giving off of heat.” Sure, that might sound a little bit unappealing, but without the process of fermentation, we wouldn’t have beer, wine, spirits, cheese, vinegar, pickles, chocolate, and so many other foods and drinks we love dearly. As a fan of nearly all fermented treasures – I’m still trying to cultivate a taste for Natto – I was very excited to attend the second annual Fermentation Festival held last weekend.

Festival Recap | Sesh Fest 2014

August 7, 2014 |

By this point in the summer, it seems like there are at least a couple beer festivals happening every weekend in or around Denver. Sure, they’re great and we all love them, but even the thirstiest craft beer drinker can feel a bit fatigued after one too many afternoons spent drinking Belgian Strong Ales, double IPAs, and Russian Imperial Stouts. Plus, they’re usually a bit pricey, so good luck convincing your friends who aren’t quite so beer-obsessed to come with you. Sometimes you just want something a little lighter and more refreshing. Thankfully, Imbibe and the Colorado Brewers Guild rewarded Denver with Sesh Fest 2014, an event dedicated to session beers and the perfect antidote to excessive, expensive beer festivals.

Canadian Roadtrip: Day 1 | Dieu di Ciel

August 5, 2014 |

Canada: our neighbor to the north. Most of the beer stereotypes about Canada involve strength over weaker American macros. While this may hold when comparing Bud Light to Molson Canadian or Labatt Blue, the craft market busts these stereotypes wide open. Those of us who have had 1 or 2 Hog Heavens then stood up can attest to this. Read More

Festival Recap | Springs Beer Fest 2014

August 4, 2014 |

A sold out beer fest is a good thing for craft beer, right?! Well, we aren’t 100% sure but we take a closer look with Springs Beer Fest 2014.

This past weekend, we were thrust into a myriad of emotions in relation to a sold out festival at the 8th Annual Springs Beer Fest at America the Beautiful Park in Colorado Springs. The festival ran from 12:00pm to 4:00pm (11am entry for VIP) with a cost of $25 for General (advance), $30 at Gate, $50 VIP. The promoters promised a fun-filled day of bottomless, fresh, craft beer samplings from over 45 notable Craft Brewers.
