Faking Adulthood | Thank You Notes
July 8, 2013 | Kate StarkThank you notes were a big deal in my family growing up. You wrote them to everyone, for everything. Someone took care of your parakeet while you were on vacation? Thank you note. Brother brought you soup when you were sick? Thank you note. Your friends threw you a surprise party? You guessed it– thank you notes for everyone!
Despite understanding why it is important to thank people for their small (or large) acts of kindness, I was horrible at writing them. I’m still not great at remembering to write them, but over the years I developed a system for composing them so that I stopped blankly staring at the paper once I got down to it. Read More
More than Winners and Losers
July 8, 2013 | Mike ZollerOn the Fourth of July Americans celebrate our country’s birthday in many ways. From BBQs with friends and families to going to fireworks in the evening, everyone has their own way to celebrate.
Sports, specifically baseball, is another way to celebrate our nation’s birth. Every team plays on July 4 and the Washington Nationals always play at home on the holiday. I’ve been to many games on July 4 and it’s a lot of fun watching our nation’s pastime on a beautiful afternoon or evening ending with a solid fireworks display.
Beerstagrams 6/28- 7/5
July 5, 2013 | Lizzie BourqueThis week’s Beerstagrams may be the tiniest bit self-centered, but that’s what birthdays are about, amirite? Birth week officially kicked off at Vine Street Pub with the tapping Porch Pounder, … Read More
Pop Culture Week in Review: June 30-July 6
July 5, 2013 | Drew TrollerIt’s sweltering hot in parts of America, so this week you had an excuse to stay indoors and watch TV/surf the internet. So I’ll assume you’re mostly caught up on pop culture as it is. But in case you were busy splaying out under an air conditioner or sleeping off a Post-Porch-Drinking-First-Anniversary-Bottle-Share-And-Party hangover… here’s the stuff you might have missed. Quick hits, because as I type in this heat my fingers are already beginning to sweat. Not really. That’s a gross image. I apologize.
Here we go.
Awesomesauce- Songza
July 4, 2013 | Laura MegoIf you’re anything like me, your music listening habits are somewhat…unique…
Basically, there are very few times in my life when I have a particular song or artist in mind that I HAVE to listen to at that particular moment. More often than not, what I want to listen to is based on vague feelings or snippets in time (which might explain why I have an iTunes playlist labeled “Cool Fall Days” and another labeled “High School Girls”.) Roundtable Discussion: What do you love about America?
July 3, 2013 | Katharine Clark 4For this week’s Roundtable Discussion and in honor of the 4th of July Thursday, I asked the PorchDrinking staffers ‘What do you love about America?’ Many have a penchant for meats (of any kind), other food items and Big Bird. Do you agree with their answers?
How to Dress for July 4th
July 2, 2013 | Ida LieszkovszkyIndependence Day is almost here, and that means it’s time to pick out a red, white and blue outfit. Preferably one with stars and stripes.
Oh, you’ve already done that? Congratulations. This means you are not a procrastinator, which is a good thing. It also means we can’t be friends, because you are clearly better at life than I am and I just won’t stand for that shit.
The Oh Hello’s
July 1, 2013 | Tristan ChanI don’t usually deal in sweeping proclamations, ok maybe I do, but if there is one band to see in person this summer, it’s the Oh Hello’s. The brother and sister duo of Tyler and Maggie Heath out of San Marcos, Texas form the core of an 11 person ensemble, that produces a robust, soulful, indie folk sound, reminiscent of Of Monsters and Men, The Head and the Heart and the Lumineers.
Pop Culture Week In Review – 6/22-6/28
June 28, 2013 | Lindsay KrumelIn today’s Pop Culture Week In Review we look at celebrity reactions to the death of DOMA, two fantastic movie trailers and the you-saw-it-coming moment of the year… the demise of Paula Deen, however surprisingly not at the hands of fried chicken.

Faking Adulthood | Basic Sewing
June 24, 2013 | Kate StarkIt’s really the little things in life that make a difference in your day-to-day, right? Small things that you don’t let become big things, or tiny gestures than make you smile. Or, feeling accomplished when you complete a simple adult-type task like some basic sewing. In a world where most jobs don’t require that we don’t use our hands too much, being able to replace a button or hem some pants makes me feel strangely self-sufficient (even if I’m not actually).
Beerstagram 6/14- 6/21

Awesomesauce- TodayIFoundOut.com
June 20, 2013 | Laura MegoI have a reputation among my friends for being sort of a know-it-all. It’s mostly random, useless knowledge which makes me a useful trivia partner, but it mostly just takes up a lot of extra brain cells that I could be using for, I don’t know, nuclear physics or something more helpful to the world at large (unless you count winning some free beer as being helpful to the world at large.) PorchDrinking Playlist Songs for Every Month
June 18, 2013 | Tristan ChanAdmittedly this playlist has absolutely nothing to do with Father’s Day or summer or anything for that matter. But instead of trying to make some far fetched correlation to how the summer months move too quickly and how the seasons change blah blah blah, just enjoy a playlist with songs for every month. And yes, March’s song is by the Ides of March… deal with it.
Remembering Coach Coles
June 17, 2013 | Mike ZollerThere are hundreds of NCAA basketball coaches out there, but none were like former Miami University basketball coach Charlie Coles. In an era where so many coaches focus on what’s politically correct to say, Coles told you exactly what he was thinking.
