Who doesn’t love a good holiday beer?! For myself specifically, I look for something either reminiscent of hot cocoa or coffee this time of the year. I want a drink that makes me feel like I could hold it close, like a recently opened present, while sitting in front of the fire surrounded by loved ones, (who are obviously all in matching pajamas) on Christmas morning. Yes, my holiday beer must be a brew with cozy flavors I can sip slowly, while watching my younger sister Jamie unwrap the EXACT Furby that I wanted (no, wait, sorry that was in 1998).

Yak & Yeti has been satisfying foodies in the Denver Metro area for more than 15 years with delicious Indian and Nepalese food, and in 2008 they began catching the eye of beer geeks when they first kicked off their in-house brewing program. They have now created an event that will satisfy anyone who falls anywhere on the Venn diagram between culinary pro and beer fanatic with their Thali Beer Dinners, the first of which will take place Tuesday, December 13 at the Yak & Yeti Arvada Brewpub.
12 Beers of Christmas | Schloss Eggenberg | Samichlaus Classic 2015

To represent Switzerland as one of PorchDrinking’s 12 Beers of Christmas, I’m not sure there is a more perfect fit than Samichlaus Classic from Schloss Eggenberg. I was told of this brew by a friend back in the States. Upon learning I was going to become a pretend Swiss resident, he told me about Samichlaus. Not the fat guy in a red jumpsuit – more on that later – but the beer. He said something about it being released once a year and having several years’ worth sitting in his cellar awaiting a vertical tasting. Seeing it on the shelf at the local beer store, I wasted no time buying it. But then wasted lots of time staring at it wondering when I should drink this fabled brew. Along came the 12 Days of Christmas article and my problem – when to drink a beer – was solved.

I’m one of those people who has always felt at home in mountains. Some people feel at home in the water, some in the city, some on the farm. For me, I feel more at ease and a bit of nostalgia even if I’m in mountains I’ve never visited before. In the summer, I like to hike and backpack and in the winter I snowboard – in any season, a refreshing beer is a great way to cap off an adventurous day! Luckily, here in Colorado it seems that every small town has it’s own brewery or at least a taphouse to find some delicious drafts.

Denver Beer Co. | Drama Queen Saison Aged in Wine Barrels

I don’t mean to be dramatic, but I think they’ve named this beer wrong. With a name like, “Drama Queen”, you’d expect this 8.3% barrel-aged saison to be too boozy, quick to fly off the handle with overly pronounced flavors. No, she is far too balanced to be called a drama queen.

New Belgium Dayblazer Taking on Big Beer and Introducing New Beer Lineup

As we’ve seen over the past three years, the likes of Constellation, North American Breweries, Heineken USA, Duvel Moortgat, Oskar Blues, Craft Beer Alliance, Kirin, along with countless other brewery conglomerates and private equity firms, have all joined the craft beer arms race, stockpiling their craft brewery portfolios in hopes of taking a crack at the monopolistic market share held by AB InBev and MillerCoors. However New Belgium Brewing, the country’s fourth largest independently owned craft brewery is taking aim at big beer via a different approach with the release of New Belgium Dayblazer Easygoing Ale.

What better way to get acquainted with Holiday beer than a December beer festival offering local, national and imported selections? For instance, BrewLights 2016 — a craft beer festival held amidst Chicago’s Lincoln Park Zoo’s animal family, adorned by a plethora of holiday lights and accompanied by plenty of holiday tunes. The scene at BrewLights made it tough not to get into the holiday spirit. Throw in a little nip in the air and the smell of Christmas beer, and it’s as if Santa himself has arranged the party. As you shop this year, it may be difficult to know what holiday-seasonal beers to purchase, so let’s go through the 12 beer samples of Christmas provided at BrewLights 2016.
