From National Beer Day to the Craft Brewers Conference in Denver, it’s been a big week for craft beer. This was my first year to attend CBC, and if you are in the industry, this is a must do event. I learned so much and met so many great folks, not to mention all the new beers I sampled. Now that we are all back home, recovering from a beer filled week, here are some ideas for your relaxing weekend in this week’s What We’re Drinking.
Somehow I’ve managed to go years without reviewing a single thing from Burial Beer Company, one of the better-known, Asheville-based brewers in North Carolina. Today we make an end to that with One For Me, Burial’s collaboration Helles Lager brewed with Other Half Brewing out of New York.
I don’t know about you, but I am still shocked by the FCC’s Net Neutrality repeal vote yesterday. I really thought our government would do better for the American people! I am also putting my faith into the many groups that are filing lawsuits to reverse this decision. On a brighter note, our PorchDrinking crew are spending this pre-holiday week drinking some great brews. Light the fire, get cozy, and see What We’re Drinking.

Tomorrow, Burial Beer Co. (Asheville, NC) will release Seasoned Skillet Donut Stout for the second consecutive year and A Paranormal Vibe Double IPA (DIPA) – the latest addition to their DIPA Earth Series. This comes as Asheville Beer Week announces last call for the week’s celebratory and beer-centric events.
The Denver Beer Beat sheds light on news of brewery openings, special tappings, firkins and one-off batches, bottle releases, dinners, pairings, etc.
American craft beer has always been an industry that has thrived off strong relationships and mutual respect. That sense of camaraderie and support of fellow industry talents has led to today’s news that beginning in March, Denver’s TRVE Brewing will begin limited distribution of Burial Beer Co. out of Asheville, North Carolina and The Commons Brewery out of Portland, Oregon.
January is rolling right along, and many of us are fighting the good fight against seasonal affective disorder. I’m not a licensed physician, but I find that the best tool for self-medication is a big, warming (possible barrel-aged) beer. Apparently the PorchDrinkers agree with me, because they enjoyed a few of those this week. Some think that brighter, fruitier libations are a better panacea for the season, but I believe that those people are quacks. This is What We’re Drinking.

The first week of the year has been chock full of new beer and event announcements. Hopefully, this is a sign that 2017 will be a great year for craft beer. I’ve already started marking release dates on my calendar and making room in my refrigerator. Forget 2016. That was a garbage year. We’ve got to focus our positive energy on the next 359 days! Craft beer is all about new experiences. The craft beer industry has taken a goods / commodities based enterprise and evolved it into an experience based business model. This is evident in brewery hosted events, taprooms/bier gardens and beers unbound by categories. This influence has extended past the brewers and imbibers to the retailers who are dreaming up new and innovative ideas to draw their customers into the door and encourage them to return many times thereafter.
New Belgium cruisers are now produced in the US, AB InBev buys Birra del Borgo, and the cast of Hamilton is getting into brewing.
