Beers For Gaming | Ascension: Eternal

April 13, 2021 |

Deck-building board games often offer a unique sensation for gamers due to the act of holding physical cards and choosing which ones to play on the board or map. The hours upon hours spent opening packs, sorting through your collection and creating strategic decks adds memories to the game itself. The satisfaction of creating a deck based around a strategy or unique ideas–and it actually working–is incredible. Read More

Fat Bottom Brewing | Knockout IPA

April 9, 2021 |

Flagship beers are the unsung heroes of a brewery. They’re the load-carrying backbone of a beer list. With every new, flashy, ridiculously-hopped IPA or adjunct loaded, melted ice cream cone passing as a stout, they’re also the first to be forgotten. Like a true workhorse, flagship beers do their job. They get packed in cases or filled in kegs to be shipped off to a sea of local grocery stores and faceless sports bars while getting snubbed by the cool kid, craft beer stores in town. Flagship beers may never get any taproom-exclusive hype, but they’re evergreen. They pay the bills, and keep the lights on.

Old Ox Brewery | Down the Hatch (Amber Lager with Hatch Green Chiles)

April 8, 2021 |

What region of the country has the most defining iconic food? Is it New York or Chicago pizza?  Philadelphia cheese steaks? Minnesota Hot Dish? Texas or Kansas City BBQ?

My nomination goes to the southwest, specifically the Hatch, NM region and their green chile. It is, in fact, green CHILE (not chili, or chilli). They take it so seriously that the New Mexico legislature passed rules requiring those products involved in the chile food and beverage trade to be labeled with “New Mexican” or “Not grown in New Mexico.”* “Red or Green?” (styles of chile) is even the official question of the state. Like I said, serious stuff… does Philly codify their cheesesteak labeling into law?

Buttonwoods Brewery | Rustic Industrial Ales

April 5, 2021 |

If you were to ask a random person to name something unique or distinctive about Rhode Island, chances are good that “Family Guy” would be the first thing they would offer. That is, of course, assuming that they didn’t mistake it for Long Island, or believe that it was a part of Massachusetts, or confuse it with the similarly named Isle of Rhodes in Greece. Such is the fate of being the smallest state in the country, with a population smaller than many large cities in the U.S.

Why I Gave Up Beer for Lent

March 29, 2021 |

February 17, I gave up beer for Lent. Not just beer, though – I actually gave up all gluten. It was an experience at first. I am that person, after all, who had to wonder if a pretzel had gluten in it. I wanted this year’s Lent to be an education, to learn something while relating to some people in my life who are gluten-free, and the helpful benefit of simultaneously giving up one of my favorite drinks in the whole wide world: beer.

Ultimate 6er | RuPaul’s Drag Race Season 13

March 24, 2021 |

RuPaul’s Drag Race is daring to do things differently in its 13th season. The show has been a savior of isolation, stretching over months as we tune in every Friday evening. This season stands apart for sharing the experiences of entertainers who have had their industry and lives shaken by the tumultuous events of 2020.

Sour Series: Company Brewing | Alphabetical Order (Pink Guava Gose)

February 24, 2021 |

The growth in popularity of Sours the past couple of years in the craft brewing community has been extremely exciting for the woman who shoved sour gummy worms in her mouth by the handful as a child. While Sour Ales may not get the love and acclaim as Barrel-Aged beers do, they should be recognized as a beer style that takes creativity and patience, not to mention access to interesting ingredients. One such brewery taking risks with their Sours and Goses is Company Brewing, based out of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Recently, I enjoyed Alphabetical Order, a Pink Guava Gose that originally started as a collaboration beer with Component Brewing.

Sour Series: Yazoo Brewing | Trio (Batch #2)

February 18, 2021 |

Brandon Jones is no stranger to barrel-aging and storytelling, using both his words and beer as the medium. Jones is a brewer, beer blender and self-proclaimed “funk wrangler” at Yazoo Brewing, one of the godfathers of the Nashville’s craft beer scene. When Brandon isn’t wrangling funk, he’s sharing recipes on his blog, EmbracetheFunk.com, where he talks about spontaneous fermentation, wild yeast and bacteria—all of what give wild ales their unique and “sour” profiles. On Embrace the Funk, Brandon states his modest goal of making the world of sour beers a bit more approachable.

February 12, 2021 |

2020 was a bad year for the craft beverage industry. A global pandemic, civil unrest, an economic recession and inadequate government aid set the stage for declining sales and desperation. Nonetheless, breweries and cideries from across the nation found creative ways to survive and to adapt, and to recommit to supporting and sustaining the communities in which they exist.
