Goldfinger Brewing Company | Vienna Lager

January 25, 2024 |

In the words of a late, great hip-hop artist, “Lager Lager Lager can’t you see, sometimes your crisp just hypnotizes me.” He didn’t exactly say those words, but we like to think he would. As it turns out, it’s just us. We are the ones hypnotized by a wonderfully crafted Lager.

Auburn is a small city of 30,000 year-round residents located in the heart of the Finger Lakes Region of New York. It also happens to the home of the state’s longest running prison facility. While other big cities were dubbed “Salt City,” “Flour City,” “Nickel City,” and so on, Auburn has long carried the moniker of “Prison City.”

With the brewery’s original location a mere two blocks from the prison, the name just fit for one of the first local breweries to open within the city in nearly a century.

The ROI of the Great American Beer Festival

October 10, 2022 |

The 40th anniversary of the Great American Beer Festival marks the first time the event has been held in person and open to the public since 2019. To say that brewers and craft beer fans are excited is an extreme understatement. While participation and attendance were limited this year due to renovations to the Colorado Convention Center, the exhibitor floor was still packed with over 200 suppliers and drew over 10,000 fans to the event.

Ultimate 6er | Road Trip Regional Edition: Pacific

March 30, 2022 |

Join us as we road trip across the United States in what is to be a follow up article to the Craft Beer Across America article. In that article we explored a craft beer from every state (excluding districts and territories) to showcase some of the unknown, or lesser-known crafter beers that the U.S. craft beer scene has to offer. While that article focused mainly on the beers, this article focuses on specific breweries from a region we think would be fun to visit. We’re going to sprinkle in a couple of bigger craft breweries in each six-brewery regional section just to help spread the word for some of the not-so-big breweries in the mix.

This is by no means a “best of” brewery list. We just wanted to highlight some breweries that brew excellent beer and have great environments and to possibly fine out more about what they do other than brew beer. Please join us as we start our road trip with the Pacific Region which includes Washington, Oregon and California.

PorchDrinking Fantasy Football Recap | Week 2

September 24, 2021 |

Week 2 of the NFL season brought us a myriad of entertaining games, comebacks and unfortunate losses. Looking at you, my poor, poor pitiful Falcons. What the hell was that? Seriously. A lot of the expected stars shined bright while others have yet to show up. Josh Allen and the Bills lit up the scoreboard while underwhelming the fantasy score sheet. Sunday Night Football featured the Kansas City Chiefs visiting Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens and was one of the best football games, at any level, in recent memory. Whether you’re celebrating a W or staring at another L, just know we’re here with you. Grab a beer and see how our matchups went down this week.

Xül Beer Co. | It’s A School Night Italian Pilsner

September 10, 2021 |

“Back to school. Back to school, to prove to Dad that I’m not a fool. I got my lunch packed up, my boots tied tight, I hope I don’t get in a fight. Ohhhh, back to school. Back to school. Back to school. Well, here goes nothing.”

Those are the words of the comedic, fictional character Billy Madison, from the movie Billy Madison. I’m sure most of us have seen this movie at some point in our lives, it’s just one of those classic comedies from the ’90s that just seem to last and stay relevant. Speaking of back to school, since mostly everybody has started back at this point, let’s learn about It’s A School Night, an Italian-Style pilsner from Knoxville, TN based Xul Beer Co.

Other Half Brewing Co. | Ivy City Lager

August 3, 2021 |

For a variety of reasons, breweries often find it challenging to produce both quality Lagers and Ales– many breweries focus solely on one or the other. One would be forgiven for thinking that the Hazy IPA-producing superstars at Other Half Brewing would be one of these one-trick pony breweries but beers like Ivy City Lager are proof positive that Other Half’s Lager game is no joke.

While many people associate Other Half with their vast assortment of Hazies – at their DC location, only three of the 20 taps are pouring a non-hazy beer — they have quietly been turning out world-class Lagers like their Zipfeltännle Pilsner collaboration with German brewing legends Rothaus, Box Car Helles, and of course the aforementioned Ivy City Lager.

This is called sensory memory, and we as humans absorb these by our sense organs all throughout our lives. Certain foods, drinks, sights, sounds or smells can awaken one of these short memories and take you back in time to a place you’ve been before. New Image Brewing | Five for Freezing Imperial Stout

March 29, 2021 |

As part of their five-year anniversary series, New Image Brewing tackles the complicated science of fractional freezing with their new Imperial Stout, Five for Freezing. Typically, frozen beer is a travesty. There’s nothing quite as disheartening as cracking open the beer you crave, only to find that it’s morphed into a slushie mess or worse, discovering that a bottle left to chill in the freezer exploded like a Peep in the microwave. However, freezing beer before it’s packaged, is actually an old-world technique that yields some highly desirable results.

Brewery Showcase | Bluejacket

March 16, 2021 |

A lot of breweries have found success by carving out a niche, focusing on a particular style of beer. Beyond a few other perfunctory beers to round out their draft list, they mostly stay in their lane. So, when a brewery comes along that can brew the entire spectrum of beer styles and do them all well, it is all the more impressive. In the DC metro area, Bluejacket is perhaps the best example. Oktoberfest Beer Showcase | Port City Brewing Oktoberfest

September 21, 2020 |

For many German beer fans, late September doesn’t just mark the onset of autumn or the beginning of a new school year. It’s the only time of year for eating too many brats, listening to polka music of questionable quality and drinking delicious beer. It’s Oktoberfest! During any other year, many would be dusting off their lederhosen and making pretzel necklaces, while visions of frothy overflowing beer steins danced in their heads.

Yet, even though COVID-19 is, sadly, torpedoing our hopes of having in-person Oktoberfest events this year, never fear. There’s still plenty of first-rate Oktoberfest beers to be had. Here in the Washington, D.C., Beltway area, those mourning the cancellation of this year’s festivities are finding solace in Port City Brewing’s exceptional take on the classic Oktoberfest Märzen Lager. Despite only being distributed in D.C., Virginia, Maryland, and some select areas of New York and North Carolina, this beer has gained international renown. It took home the gold medal at the 2014 World Beer Championships, silver at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival and is currently ranked the 27th best Oktoberfest/Märzen style beer in the world by reviewers on Beer Advocate.
