Ultimate 6er | The Great British Baking Show: Collection 8

October 6, 2020 |

Netflix is home to many shows that enjoy a cult-like following, and The Great British Baking Show is no exception. The delightful baking show takes place in a tent and puts 12 amateur bakers to the test, each hoping to win the weekly Star Baker award and, ultimately, the entire show. What’s crazy to Americans is that there is no cash prize for the winner — it’s all about the love of baking.

Editor’s note: This article was written after the first episode. The second episode has since been released on Netflix.

April 17, 2019 |

Since it’s inception, Netflix has always been a media trailblazer from shipping DVDs to offering original content on its streaming service. Netflix released a few movies early on to critical acclaim but never to the success of their various TV shows that we’ve covered twice.

2018 was the year Netflix really stepped up their game delivering original films and I’m not just talking about Roma. This Ultimate 6er covers six incredibly diverse and underrated gems that you might not be aware of.

Ultimate 6er | Netflix Original Programming

June 22, 2016 |

Netflix is the little technology business that could, going from movies-through-the-mail to one of the largest streaming services in the world. Available on every smart device and video game console available, Netflix has a reported total of 81 million people – with 46 million being in the US alone. It’s replaced cable for most of us, opening up a treasure chest of hidden gems and old classics in the most digestible manner possible. Pop Culture Week in Review 11/1 – 11/8

November 8, 2013 |

Usually when we start a Week in Review with, “this has been a slow week for pop culture,” it’s not entirely true. It’s a lament to a slow week for bombastic mainstream news. No, this doesn’t mean I’m putting on the hipster glasses, it just means there’s been a lot of niche news. While that’s the case this week, there was one megabust that dropped: Blockbuster is dead, long live Blockbuster. This time, it’s more than just a flesh-wound.

4 Ways to Feel About “Arrested Development” Season 4

May 30, 2013 | 3

Safe to say, we here at PorchDrinking are bona fide fans of “Arrested Development” (and four of those stories were written by me). So we were all pretty excited this week at the launch of Season 4 of the show – fifteen brand new episodes all at once! The Bluths are back!

The internet, of course, has had its say. And it hasn’t exactly been a consensus. So I present my (almost entirely) spoiler-free way of processing the complicated feelings you may have. As you ask yourself, “Did I like this? Should I watch it again? What is Netflix getting out of this?” check out the 4 very different ways to feel about season 4 of TV’s best comedy ever.

(Okay, I’ll editorialize. I’m in camp #2 here. Not to be confused with Camp Kissa-Me-Mommy.)

Pop Culture Week In Review 3/29 – 4/5

April 5, 2013 |

I was going to open this article as I normally do, rife with raucous wordplay, comedic puns and a thematic undertone that riddles its way throughout the article. “Outrageous!” you declare. “I now, as a dedicated reader who exists, feel cheated! Why?!” Well, frankly, because Roger Ebert died. That’s why. Happy? Of course you’re not.

A Netflix Addict’s Cry for Help

January 24, 2013 | 6

I am writing this piece at my computer during one of the rare free moments when I’m not consuming media. About four and a half years ago, while sitting in my freshman college dorm’s common area, I heard someone mention Hulu.com. Two years ago, my cousin bought me a trial of something called Netflix.

Since discovering these (and other) ways to enjoy movies and TV, they’ve become a huge part of my life.

And I’m not sure whether that’s a great thing.
