Yards Brewing Company | Jefferson’s Golden Ale

May 15, 2020 |

Philadelphia: The city of brotherly and sisterly love. Whether you live in Philadelphia, the surrounding area that wishes it was Philly, or are just visiting, the significance of the history of the eastern Pennsylvania city is undeniable. From statues of individuals such as William Penn, John Barry and George Washington, to the bricked neighborhood of Old City and an almost deity like appreciation of Benjamin Franklin, the 300+ years of history are sure to include beer as well. Yards Brewing Company, in the city’s Northern Liberties neighborhood, thrives off the old world tradition of beer styles with Jefferson’s Golden Ale, formerly called Thomas Jefferson’s Tavern Ale.

What We’re Drinking | July 19, 2019

July 19, 2019 |

Depending on how you look it at, summer is just about halfway over. If that isn’t cause for a beer or two, then I don’t know what is. But while we still have another half to go, let’s send it off in style and have some great beers. Here’s what we’re drinking this week. Read More

The Weekly Buzz | October 26 – November 1

November 2, 2018 |

Here’s the deal, people: Jobs are terrible. People who have never actually done my job spend hours telling me how I shoud do it. It’s so infuriating that I had to edit several f-bombs out of this piece already. Luckily, I have beer. It allows me to relax. Anyway… Here’s some stuff from Twitter and Instagram. Enjoy The Weekly Buzz!

The Weekly Buzz | July 20 – 26

July 27, 2018 |

I’ve just arrived at the point where I have decided to neglect my real, bills-paying job in order to do a little work for my Internet beer-writing gig. Typing this intro on my phone is a real time-saver! I don’t know why I never thought of this before. The sign on the door that reads “No Personal Cell Phones in Work Area” doesn’t bother me either. Everyone here knows that The Weekly Buzz is more important than operating this very complex cement plant control room. If only they’d let me drink on the job…

How does my employer expect me to waste time on Twitter while working a 70-hour week? Joke’s on them! I do it on the clock. Anyway, here’s all the nonsense that I discovered while I while shirking my responsibilities. This is The Weekly Buzz!

The Weekly Buzz | June 29 – July 5

July 6, 2018 |

This week has been an absolute nightmare. I have been working ridiculous hours at my day job, and the cell service in my office isn’t even good enough to load Twitter. Luckily, Wednesday was Independence Day, so I had plenty of holiday posts to choose from. Prepare to feel very patriotic. It’s time to crack open The Weekly Buzz.

Yards Brewing Company | Brawler

July 6, 2018 | 1

In the heart of the City of Brotherly Love lies Yards Brewing Company. A purveyor of fine ales since 1994, Yards as a knack for extraordinarily balanced beers ranging from a classic IPA, to an amber ale brewed with spruce tips. One example is Brawler, “the pugilist-style ale.” The 4.2% ABV English dark mild is brewed with roasted barley, Amber and Crystal Malts, a pesky English specialty yeast and rocks a smooth 12 IBUs.

It’s been a busy week. I’m working 20 hours of overtime this week, but that’s not even what I’m talking about. Beer festival season is upon us, and the task of sorting through thousands of festival-related tweets and ‘grams has fallen to me. In the words of the demigod Maui from the Disney animated feature “Moana,” You’re welcome. This is The Weekly Buzz.

After a long weekend and a short work week, all I can think of is drinking more beer. Luckily, there will be plenty of opportunities this summer! So grab a lunch beer — something sessionable, of course — and check out this week’s beer-related social media nonsense. This is The Weekly Buzz!

The Weekly Buzz | May 4 – 10

May 11, 2018 |

I need to wake up at 4 A.M. to go to the gym. I’m not sure that this is the best way to live my life. I should be staying up late, drinking beer and waking up for work at the last possible second. What’s happening to me?! Anyway, here’s a bunch of stuff I found on Twitter and Instagram. Just because I’m not drinking, doesn’t mean you can’t have your own Weekly Buzz!

The Weekly Buzz | April 20 – 26

April 27, 2018 |

I want to drink beer, but I don’t want to be fat. After daily two-hour workouts, I’m so tired that one beer makes me fall asleep. This wasn’t the effect I was going for. I just wanted to have a moderately repectable dad-bod. Becoming an old man who falls asleep halfway through an episode of Home Improvement was not the plan. Anyway… Here’s a bunch of stuff I found on the Internet. This is The Weekly Buzz.

The Weekly Buzz | March 30 – April 5

April 6, 2018 |

We here at PorchDrinking hope that you spent this week’s holy days surrounded by friends, family and fine craft beers. April Fool’s Day is a sacred tradition that MUST be observed annually, so that we may keep our rich heritage of tomfoolery alive and vibrant. Without it, we would lose a large piece of what we are as a species. To that end, here is a celebration of nonsense and shenanigans. This is The Weekly Buzz.

The Weekly Buzz | March 16 – 22

March 23, 2018 |

I had planned on writing something political this week. The urge to create a good old-fashioned doom-and-gloom post was almost undeniable, but it turns out that I don’t have the energy. There is simply no fuel left in my tank. We had a snowstorm on the second day of spring, which led to a lot of unwelcome shoveling. I had to replace the battery in my fiancee’s car (in the midst of the heaped-up snow). It’s just been one of those weeks. Here’s some stuff from Twitter and Instagram. I’ll be in bed drinking beer and enjoying my Weekly Buzz.

Cooking with Beer | Corned Beef Stew with Yards Love Stout

March 12, 2018 |

There are many dishes that have come to represent St. Patrick’s Day. From shepherd’s pie to soda bread, colcannon to boxty’s, these forms of Irish fare exemplify the simplistic nature of living off of the crops and the land in Ireland. There is one dish that stands out in many people’s minds as being the epitome of true Irish cooking; corned beef.

Since I’m writing this on International Women’s Day, I would be remiss if I didn’t thank all of my strong, creative female colleagues at PorchDrinking. The Weekly Buzz | January 19 – 25

January 26, 2018 |

It’s high time that we discuss something very important. That thing is the NFC Conference Championship. The result was exactly as I thought it would be — a thorough shellacking of the Minnesota Viking by a vastly superior football team. Nick Foles led the Eagles to victory and will do so again in the Super Bowl. Philly loves to be the underdog, so keep underestimating them, Tom Brady! Oh… and I found some beer things on Twitter, too. This is the Weekly Buzz.

Yards & Harpoon Place a Wager on the Super Bowl

January 26, 2018 |

Super Bowl LII is barreling toward Minneapolis. The Philadelphia Eagles and New England Patriots are going to clash in a David and Goliath showdown, which will hopefully be a game for the ages. As a lifelong Eagles fan, I hope the Birds give the Patriots the thrashing of their lives. As if the game wasn’t going to be fun enough already, breweries in the teams’ hometowns are placing a little bet on the big game. Just as you would expect, it all started on Twitter.
