Proper Brewing Co. | Whispers of the Primordial Sea Smoked Helles with Pineapple

He’d had his recipe for the smoked Helles with pineapple tucked away since his days working at a cidery in Oregon. Then, in late 2020, Proper put the beer on draft as a one-off. And in mid-2021 Whispers of the Primordial Sea hit the Utah market in 16-ounce cans. It became an instant hit.

Epic Brewing | 2021 Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout Variants Preview
October 1, 2021 | Brian PhippsFor the previous 10 years, Epic Brewing of Utah and Colorado produces Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout, a stout aged in whiskey barrels with added cacao nibs and coffee. It is a delightful beer, the ingredient flavors are recognizable, and it is high in ABV at 11.7%. Since 2016, Epic Brewing each year produces variants with this year’s batch showing fulfilling and fun achievements.
To start, the just-released 2021 line-up features six variants: Naked Baptist, In The Rye, Black Forest Cake, Double Barrel, Double Jam and Chocolate Mint. All are available across retail partners across Colorado starting September 30 and customers are able to order online for pick up from September 30 – October 11.

May 5, 2021 | Mathew PowersCinco de Mayo has come to mean less about its history and more about parties filled with fishbowl margaritas, music and taco platters, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing. The Mexican-American relationship has undoubtedly been a strained one over the centuries. Indeed, such events as endless immigration issues, the Bracero Program and the U.S.-Mexican War (and subsequent Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo where Mexico ceded 55 percent of its territory to the U.S. — present-day Arizona, California, New Mexico, Texas, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah) mark the struggles between two countries. So, sure, there are plenty of real-life, geopolitical issues that can be discussed. And, yes, some confuse Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence day, instead of its true meaning: the date of the Mexican army’s May 5, 1862 victory over France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War (also known as Battle of Puebla Day). But, why not let it be a celebration of Mexican food and culture, even if it’s a bit cheesy (pun intended)? Maybe it’s good to forget the meaning and just have fun. Policy Kings Brewery | Love Black IPA, Hate Hazy IPA
May 3, 2021 | Tim HaranPolicy Kings Brewery made history when it opened in late 2018, becoming Utah’s first Black-owned brewery. In 2021, the Cedar City-based nanobrewery released a pair of canned beers to “pay homage to Black culture,” said owners Deandre (Dre) and Sara Ridgel. The resulting Love/Hate Series features Love Black IPA and Hate Hazy IPA. Initially, two of each were sold together in 16-ounce four packs only at the brewery.

March 23, 2021 | Erik StabileThe Ichthyosaur was a marine reptile that lived during the Mesozoic era. They were big: The largest known specimen was 75 feet long. They were also a little terrifying—imagine being chased by a monster the size of a greyhound bus with the speed of a dolphin and the jaws of a crocodile. The last Ichthyosaur died about 90 million years ago but in 1993, the Ichthyosaur was reborn as Great Basin Brewery’s flagship beer, the Ichthyosaur “ICKY” IPA.

Brewing Trio Teams Up for Women’s History Month
March 8, 2021 | Taylor LaabsGetting the proper education to professionally brew and judge craft beer is vital to finding success in the craft beer industry, yet these educational opportunities are not distributed equally. Pink Boots Society, an association designed to “assist, inspire and encourage women fermented/alcoholic beverage industry professionals to advance their careers through education,” is looking to change that. One of the best ways to advance the Pink Boots cause is through added funding and visibility, which commonly manifests through unique brewing partnerships Pink Boots works on with interested breweries.
With this in mind, Brew Pipeline, Potosi Brewery and Pink Boots Society teamed up to brew up a beer just in time for March, which is Women’s History Month. The grapefruit-forward Hefeweizen, dubbed Rosa Stiefel, or German for “pink boots,” is the latest collaboration aimed at advancing educational efforts for women looking to get into the craft beer space. Strong BA Series | Epic Brewing Sextuple Barrel Big Bad Baptist Imperial Stout
December 18, 2020 | Jaclyn MenendezSome people call this magical time of year the holiday season. People who read this website probably know it more as Stout Season. But at Epic Brewing, it’s Baptist Season. And this year, they went big.
Epic Brewing, originating in Utah, is famous for being the state’s first brewery since prohibition to solely brew beer with a “high” alcohol content. Now, in Utah, that means something different than you’re probably thinking: Back in 2009 when Epic was founded, the Beehive State considered any beer above 4.0% ABV to be a “strong brew” and restricted those sales to state-run liquor stores (they’ve now increased that maximum up to 5.0%, those daredevils). But Epic Brewing didn’t just make strong beer by Utah standards; like most kids with strict parents, they rebelled and started making strong beer. Thus, in 2011, their Big Bad Baptist series was born: A Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout with coffee that was such a hit, the brewery turned it into an annual tradition and introduces new variants each year during Baptist Season.

In the Czech Republic, beer is not just a beloved beverage, it is a way of life. Stepping into a Bohemian beer hall is an immersion into a rich and ancient brewing tradition that rivals the grandest biergartens in Munich or Trappist monasteries in Belgium. Czech brewing contributions include the first Pilsner, the Saaz hop, the perfection of traditional decoction brewing and many others. It’s a Lager-focused culture and Czechs have long made some of the best lagers in the world.
