GABF 2019 Events Guide

For one week a year, Denver and the surrounding metro area turn upside down for the Great American Beer Festival. While the festival floor is a great place to sample thousands of beers from all across, the events happening outside of the festival have become equally as impressive and formidable. From tap take-overs to beer dinners, special release to actual full-blown separate beer festivals all together have broken off of GABF. So, to help provide some perspective and frothy guidance, we have made that navigation a bit easier with a 2019 GABF Week Events Guide. Too much to sort through and choose? Don’t worry, chuggernaut, we got you covered.

Monday, 9/30 – S’mores Yeti Imperial Stout, 9.5% ABV

Reach for S’mores Yeti and find yourself transported to a cozy campfire setting without ever leaving the comfort of your home; though enjoying this decadent treat fireside is definitely encouraged. Enjoy all the tastes of the classic campsite dessert blended with the rich, roasty malt flavor of Yeti Imperial Stout. A beer for telling tales and creating new ones.
*Also available in 19.2oz cans to-go

Tuesday, 10/1 – Mexican Chocolate Yeti Imperial Stout, 9.5% ABV

A very special, and very limited, entry in our venerable Yeti Series, Mexican Chocolate Yeti is a sensory delight. We’ve added a variety of spices, vanilla and coffee to Yeti Imperial Stout to create our version of a traditional champurrado drink. Spiced chocolate drinks have been part of Aztec and Mayan cuisine and culture for centuries, but they have yet to be paired with a Yeti!
*Also available in 19.2oz cans to-go

Wednesday, 10/2 – Hibernation Ale, 8.7% ABV

Hibernation Ale has been our celebrated winter tradition since 1995. A classic English-style old ale, we forgo the holiday spices in favor of a robust, dry-hopped ale featuring a malty richness balanced with a complex hop profile. Hearty and warming in character, when winter approaches, it’s time for Hibernation.

*Also available in 12oz 6-pack cans to-go

Thursday, 10/3 – Jameson Irish Whiskey/Great Divide Collaboration Gra-va Barrel Aged Porter, 5.5% ABV

For our latest Jameson Caskmates collaboration, we opted for a
traditional beer style we feel will complement the rich tradition of Jameson Irish Whiskey. A porter can appear simple on the surface, but craft beer connoisseurs will appreciate the subtle complexity this particular brew exhibits. The beer is dry and roasty, utilizing all specialty malts. To further differentiate our porter, we incorporated freshly roasted coffee beans from our favorite local coffee purveyor. We chose a coffee blend that will impart notes of citrus, wild honey, caramel and fresh fruit, paired with a sweet, clean finish and impeccable balance. Expertly aged in Jameson barrels, this porter has some zip while still paying homage to the style. We had some fun with the name, blending the Irish word for love (Grá) with a nickname for coffee (Java)

Friday, 10/4 – Fresh Hop, 61.% ABV

Fresh Hop is a labor of love meant to be enjoyed today. For this year’s entry in the category, we opted for a Citra SMaSH Pale Ale using wet, whole cone Citra hops from Washington’s Yakima Valley and Marris Otter Malt. Dry-hopped and bursting with aroma, savor this delightful pale ale as soon as you can to fully appreciate it grassy, citrus hop brilliance.

Date/Time: Sep 30 – Oct 5, 11 AM – 10 PM

Details: We’ll be tapping some new, returning and rare beers during GABF week at both of our Denver taprooms!

Metaberry Bottle Release @ Westbound & Down Brewing Company, 1617 Miner St, Idaho Springs, Colorado

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 11 AM – 10 PM

Details: Join us during GABF week for a special bottle release and tapping of Metaberry, our barrel-aged golden sour blend refermented on 5 pounds per gallon of Oregon grown red raspberries.

Pushing the boundaries of what fruited sours can be, we used only our most select barrels of golden sour combined with the best fruit we’ve ever had. We blended golden sour from first use Pinot Noir and Merlot barrels and added a ludicrous five pounds per gallon of whole red raspberries from Oregon’s Willamette Valley for refermentation. The result is one of our favorite beers to come out of our experimental projects and barrel-aging program.

750ml/$25 + tax. Limit 2 bottles per person per day.

We’ll also be pulling bottles from the W&D cellar to add to our to-go cooler throughout the week.

Dim Mak @ Wit’s End Brewing Company, 1330 Zuni Street, Unit N, Denver, Colorado

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 2, 2019 at 2 PM – 8 PM

Details: Inspired by many of Belgium’s devilish golden ales, the yeast gives off aromas of lemon rind and licorice. Although excitingly dry from the use of Chinese rock candy, the silky body and sweet lemon-pepper notes prevail. Like an iron palm breaking the bottom brick, the alcohol warmth is delayed and hits you in the chest, which of course by then it is too late…welcome to the Dim Mak!

Medianoche Premier & Malibu Medianoche Bottle Release @ WeldWerks Brewing, 508 8th Ave, Greeley, CO

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 2 from 12 – 9 PM

Details: WeldWerks is releasing two new Medianoche variants on Wednesday, October 2: Medianoche Premier, Vol. 1 & Malibu Medianoche. (Prices, limits, and more details will be announced in the weeks to come).

Early teaser from WeldWerks:

Medianoche Premier, Vol. 1
Medianoche Premier represents the pinnacle of our barrel-aging program and each entry is a unique and inimitable blend, showcasing the most flavorful, complex, and expressive casks in our inventory. For this inaugural entry, we blended nine different barrels, originating from five different types of spirits, and ranging in age from 15 to 23 months, with the average age of the blend landing at almost exactly 19 months:

  • 22% double barrel-aged for 20 months, first in 8-year bourbon barrels for 9 months, then in 11-year bourbon barrels for 11 months
  • 22% aged 16 months in 12-year apple brandy barrels
  • 11% aged 23 months in 12-year brandy barrels
  • 11% aged 23 months in 10-year rye whiskey barrels
  • 11% aged 21 months in 14-year bourbon barrels
  • 11% aged 19 months in 10-year bourbon barrels
  • 11% aged 15 months in 12-year Jamaican rum barrels

Malibu Medianoche
When we managed to get our hands on some freshly emptied 12-year Jamaican rum casks, we knew we wanted to do something special with them, so we resurrected one of our most-requested draft-only variants– Malibu Medianoche. After aging this batch in the Jamaican rum barrels for more than 15 months, we finished the beer on more than 1.5 lbs/gallon of toasted coconut and raw coconut, along with Madagascar vanilla beans, resulting in a rich, complex, dessert-like beer that evokes island life as much as it does fall in Colorado.

GABF 2019 Releases @ Novel Strand Brewing – 305 1st Ave, Denver, Colorado

Date/Time: Wednesday, October 2 – Monday, October 7

Details:  WOOHOO! IT’S GABF TIME ONCE AGAIN, Y’ALL!
We’re not doing anything too crazy, but we do have some dope, dope, dope, DOPE beers we are releasing for you beautiful people. And so, without further ado- and in no particular order- here is what we’ve got coming for your mouths!

– POPULAR DEMAND, a German Kellerpils inspired lager brewed with Kohatu, Motueka, Taiheke, and Waimea hops from New Zealand.

– POQUITO MÁS, a small ale fermented and conditioned in second use Cabernet Sauvignon barrels. Brewed with local barley and wheat from our friends at Troubadour Maltings (FoCo), along with flaked wheat and oats from St. Louis, and 10+ year old aged, whole cone Bobek hops from Slovenia. We brewed this as a ‘raw ale’ which means the wort was never boiled and thus contains a greater variety of substrate molecules from the malts for our microbes to play with. It was fermented by the leftover microbes of DANCING WITH THE MOON, so a cosmopolitan blend that includes multiple strains of Saccharomyces, Brettanomyces, Pediococcus, Lactobacillus, and likely other little buggers.
– BAERELY STRANDED, a mixed fermentation Saison inspired ale blended from stainless steel and oak components created by our dear friends, neighbors, and total sweeties at Baere Brewing Company. We brewed up a little Saison inspired ale, again with local goodness from Troubadour Maltings and those beautiful aged hops we have, and fermented it with both Saccharomyces and Brettanomyces. We then blended this stainless-steel fermented beer with 2 different, nearly 1 year old Saisons that the fellers from Baere were sitting on. To make it all better, we’re canning this beer in 16.9oz 4packs because why the hell not?!

-KIWI., the return of our 100% NZ hopped strong hoppy ale! Loads of Motueka, Moutere, Nelson Sauvin, Rakau, Taiheke, and Waimea dance on a bed made of Pilsner, Golden Promise, Malted wheat, flaked oats, and flaked wheat.  4packs to go and cans in house. 7,5% ABV. No worries, mates!

-SOUTHERN LIGHTS, the return of this little sour beauty, dry hopped entirely with southern hemisphere hops: African Queen (SA), Enigma (AUS), Kohatu (NZ), Moutere (NZ), Nelson Sauvin (NZ), and Waimea (NZ). We brew up some wort, let some Lactobacillus bacteria get all up in it with that good acid, then ferment it with our hoppy beer yeast strain. Then dry hop it aggressively, but with a smile.

-CONTAINS HOPS, the return of a beer that really isn’t fair. We just take the sexiest hops possible and load it up. Columbus (USA), Citra (USA), Galaxy (AUS), Mosaic (USA), Nelson Sauvin (NZ), and Strata (USA). Yeah, we know. It’s pretty crazy.

-GREEN QUEEN, this beer is a beauty. It starts its life off as GREEN SHOWERS, our favorite beer, loaded with Amarillo (USA), Huell Melon (GER), Idaho #7 (USA), and Mosaic (USA). We take this beer to a whole ‘nother level by adding African Queen (SA) hops during the whirlpool and at multiple steps during dry hopping.

– DANCING WITH THE MOON, we will be pulling just 24 bottles of this (sold out) beer to make available during GABF weekend. These are being pulled from cases set aside for vintages during the next few years. An ale brewed (12.21.2018) with local malt from Troubadour Maltings and aged hops. Fermented in freshly emptied Cabernet Sauvignon barrels from David Arthur vineyards in California by an eclectic blend of microbes. Re-fermented in the bottle.

– NITWIT, our classic Belgian style Witbier, brewed with local malt, Hallertau Blanc hops, and freshly cracked Indian coriander. We ferment this beer with our custom developed blend of Belgian yeasts for a traditional flavor.

GABF week special tapping – Now with 2x the Yeti! @ Great Divide Brewing Co., 2201 Arapahoe St, Denver, Colorado

Date/Time: Sep 30 – Oct 5, 11 AM – 10 PM

Details: We’ll be tapping some new, returning and rare beers during GABF week at both of our Denver taprooms!

Good Bugs Hazy IPA Release @ Jagged Mountain Craft Brewery, 1139 20th St, Denver, Colorado

Date/Time: Thursday, October 5, 2019 at 11 AM

Details:  Good Bugs is a new Hazy IPA in collaboration with Odd 13 and 4 Noses. Brewed and dry-hopped with Amarillo, Centennial and Citra hops, each brewer then chose a different yeast to put their own touch on this collab. Fruit Sacch was our choice, which is a wild yeast that gives off extra fruity aromas with a sweet funkiness to finish.
This beer is tapping on Thursday 10/3 but will also be showcased that night from 7:30-8:15 at GABF in the Brewers Studio. Try all 3 of these side by side and hear the brewers from Jagged, Odd 13 and 4 Noses talk about them!
Thanks to our friends at Inland Island and Brewed Food for always providing us with the best yeasts and flavors!

We get it.. GABF week is all-consuming in more ways than one. Savoring each sip of tasty brew along with entertaining the endless gauntlet of conversation and navigating one line after another can be, well.. exhausting.

But what about for our beloved canine friends?! Stuck at home all week while ma and pa galavant around town as if they’re free to work all week and come home at odd hours in the night mumbling nonsense. Without treats!? Let’s face it folks. Our dogs care less about your reinvigorated love for Baltic porters and oyster stouts and more for getting the heck outside and enjoying this glorious fall weather in its prime.

Enter our post-GABF “Hair of the Dog” Sunday. An opportunity to get your favorite pup out and about for some party time in the dog park while you recover with a cold one. We’re teaming up with our homies from Bagby Beer & Bierstadt Lagerhaus to bring you some crisp, light and refreshing brewskis along with a full on, decked out michelada bar to spice things up just a little.

So let’s look forward to all of the excitement and relentless, mind blowing joy that goes along with GABF week, knowing that we’ve got our sights set on the last day of the weekend to properly unwind with our favorite furry friends.
