What We’re Drinking | August 7, 2020

What We're Drinking
Justin Pennel

Here were are entering the fourth quarter of the year and things haven’t settled down yet or returned to normal. Who would’ve thought that would be the case five months ago? Anyway, off-premise alcohol sales continue to soar and that seems to be the one consistency over the last several months. This week our nation came together to celebrate one of the most time honored traditions, National IPA Day (August 6). This is What We’re Drinking to celebrate the holiday and some other non-IPA varieties.

We tasted Branch & Bone’s rendition of the Black Is Beautiful benefit beer this weekend (100% of proceeds from their version will go to Dayton's chapter of the NAACP). This version was especially exciting for me because they used Sugar Creek Malt’s bourbon barrel-aged malt, and I was eager to see how that malt came through. The barrel came through in some subtle oak, chocolate-covered cherry, and bourbon-infused bon bons. It provides a more subtle bourbon character, and the result splits the difference between a base imperial stout and a bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout. Layered, nuanced, and not too aggressive. I’m eager to taste more beers made with these barrel-aged malts. #imperialstout #bourbonbarrelmalt #barrelagedmalt #ohiobeer #ohiocraftbeer #drinkbeermadehere #drinkbeermadehereohio #drinkohiobeer #inspiredbydayton #daytoninspires #937beer #branchandbone #branchandboneales #branchandboneartisanales #blackisbeautifulbeer #sugarcreekmalt #craftmalt #craftmaltings #craftmaltsters
