Boys Are From Märzen Podcast | Japas Cervejaria & Beerternational
In Episode 73 of the “Boys Are From Märzen” podcast, Kindsey Bernhard is joined by Fernanda Ueno, Maíra Kimura and Yumi Shimada, founders of Japas Cervejaria and Pooah Alon, founder of Beerternational.
Fernanda Ueno, Maíra Kimura and Yumi Shimada met through their love of beer and founded Japas Cervejaria in 2015 in São Paulo, Brazil. The three Japanese-Brazilian women use their ancestry as inspiration for their recipes and the ingredients used in the beers.
Pooah Aland founded Beerternational to help brew, distribute, and sell international beers in the United States. Japas Cervejaria partnered with Beerternational to bring their beers to the United States. You can find Japas beer in California, Florida, Massachusetts, Maine, Rhode Island, Michigan, New York, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.
Please also note that the term “Japas” should only be used in reference to the brewery or when given permission, as it is a slang term for those of Japanese descent. The women of Japas Cervejaria use the term to harness the word, reappropriating it to showcase pride in their heritage.
