Small Beer, Big Brand

Over the last few years, health-conscious trends have been on the rise in the bev-alc industry. Think Dry January, better-for-you beverages, and things like sober curiosity. Considering that, it’s no surprise that the table beers of yesteryear are also gaining momentum.
Intended to be super sessionable, table beers are low-ABV brews meant for consumption at any time of day. Undeniably, that 9% Double IPA you snuck in at Chili’s on your lunch break never turns out well. However, a crushable sub 3% Lager will make those spreadsheets seem like an afternoon walk in the park when you return to the office.
Like any category in the beer space, it takes more than just good liquid to attract new customers. Clean can art and a bold brand can sway consumer behavior as much as the beer that lies within. Enter chat: Small Beer, a big brand brewed up by the creative team behind Chubbies Shorts.
The Beer
Small Beer lives in the Beer Street Brands family, alongside Goldies Beer. Its original recipe was developed with the help of Lincoln Beer Co out of Burbank, CA — shoutout Head Brewer Pat Dunn. As Small Beer got bigger, so to speak, they sought more capacity and are now produced at Prost Brewing in Denver, CO, through a contract brewing agreement.
“Small Beer is all about big flavor, low impact,” says Mason Robinson, Small Beer’s Co-Founder. “We’re taking a digital-first approach to building the brand—using the same playbook we developed at Chubbies: start with a great product (delicious 2–3% ABV craft beer), build a rad brand around it that people actually want to be part of, and turn that interest into real-world demand,” Robinson adds. Small Beer’s ultimate goal? To become the name in low-ABV beer (aka “small beer”).

Small Beer pours a pale gold from its simple, yet stunning can. It is pleasantly light in aroma and flavor, as one could expect from a 2.5% ABV, 80-calorie lager. It’s crisp, it’s refreshing. In fact, it’s the beer you’ve been looking for. “More and more people are realizing they want the taste, the ritual, the social magic of beer—just without the blackout or next-day brain fog,” Robinson points out. “As moderation goes mainstream, Small’s right there with it… and yeah, we’re pretty stoked about that.” Small Beer is distributed in Colorado and Texas, and can be shipped directly to consumers in California. As the new adage goes, now you can halve your beer and drink it, too.
