Ellie Thompson

Having grown up in the great state of Kansas, it is no surprise Ellie acquired her beer enthusiasm from drinking lots of Boulevard Wheat. She also very much enjoys keeping up with new music and has channeled that “hobby” into creating weekly playlists for PD. In the real world, Ellie is a graduate student in Chicago studying Auditory Neuroscience; she is primarily interested in how music changes the brain.

PorchDrinking Playlist | Melodies for Arctic Hearts

January 13, 2015 |

Embracing the cold calls for warm coats, cold winter ales (or, hot toddies), and a good ol’ fashioned winter-themed playlist. This week’s list, a compilation of melodies for arctic hearts, will provide the wintry lullabies for this season’s ensuing hibernation.

PorchDrinking Playlist | A Very Sufjan Christmas

December 16, 2014 |

With two “box-set” holiday albums (i.e. multi-CD conglomerates) overflowing with merry melodies, this playlist is inspired by indie singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens and his unashamed Christmas proclivities. From renditioning the classics, to caroling his way through uncharted holiday territory, this playlist … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Thanksgiving Playlist Part 2

November 25, 2014 |

Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, this week’s playlist features songs of recognition and gratefulness. Whether it be Röyksopp’s futuristic cognizance of friendship, Earth, Wind & Fire’s gospel praise “Gratitude”, or Chance the Rapper’s affection for family, these songs surely subsume the various ways to give thanks. And if one Thanksgiving playlist wasn’t enough, perhaps revisit our offering from last year. Thanks for listening! Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Indie Folk

October 21, 2014 |

Last week, a friend invited me to see Marketa Irglova, a musician that pleases my folksy proclivities. Known for The Swell Season, as well as her refulgent role in the movie “Once”, Marketa has successfully galvanized musician friends to corroborate her multidimensional musical luster … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Kele of Bloc Party, New Album: Trick

October 14, 2014 |

With the release of his newest album, “Trick,” Kele Okereke surpasses his previously successful stint as a solo artist. Speaking to Billboard, “I feel like you become more confident in every record you make.”  Familiar fans know Kele as the frontman for … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Cut Copy

September 23, 2014 |

The Australian electronic band Cut Copy, though formed in 2001, has become more successful these past few years with their appearance at large music festivals such as Governors Ball, SxSW and Lollapalooza, as well as the release of their hit albums “In Ghost Colours” and “Free Your Mind.” Their eclectic pop vibes, though youthful and lighthearted, are admirable and majestic, despite their seasoned veteran status. This playlist features some of the best Cut Copy songs, in my opinion, yet also includes singles from other bands that have similarly fresh sounds.

PorchDrinking Playlist | Justin Vernon

September 16, 2014 |

Though Wisconsinite Justin Vernon “made it big” with Bon Iver, many are unaware of his peregrine productivity and diffuse collaborations. From a Hip-Hop/R&B partnership with Kanye West, to bluesy Carolina Folk ballads with Megafaun, in my opinion, JV is one of the most esteemed artists … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Nascent Fall

September 9, 2014 |

As the summer winds down and traces of autumn emerge, I can’t help but share my enthusiasm for the best time of year. Whether it be the temperature descent, the color transformation or the pumpkin invasion, (every.single.food&drink.possible) autumn is slowly rearing its … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Discovering New Music

August 19, 2014 |

Thanks to highly accessible music sites like Pandora and Spotify, little effort is needed to discover new music. However, these radio stations can be repetitive as well as incompetent in their periodic integration of new releases.  Therefore, recently, I’ve been looking for new ways for … Read More

Brunch Playlist

August 13, 2014 |

Weekend brunch. A meal which beseeches quick decision making and hyper-analysis of a restaurant’s menu. One is often faced with the difficult question: should I order breakfast or lunch?

This past weekend, my brother (visiting from out of town) and I solved this … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Lollapalooza Highlights

July 29, 2014 |

The most anticipated–yet also most frustrating–aspect of large music festivals (especially one like Lollapalooza) is the abundance of performing artists.  With five stages spanning the majority of Grant Park (319 acres!), one can imagine planning a weekend schedule requires making compromises (this year more than 130 … Read More

PorchDrinking Playlist | Rap Roster

PorchDrinking Playlist | Summer Air

June 17, 2014 |

Now that it is well into the month of June, summer has (finally) graced Chicago with its presence. In that light, this week’s playlist features music from a variety of artists, yet their unifying feature is their “summer-y” sound. I highly recommend … Read More

PD Playlist | Remixes & Mashups

May 20, 2014 |

Much of what I know about electronic music I owe to my brother, and this week’s playlist was inspired by an article in The New Yorker last month about the Berlin techno scene. “Electronic music” has many subgenres (e.g., dubstep, … Read More
