Dogfish Head | Engine 19 IPA

Engine 19 IPA Can on ice
Zeke Ottemiller

Let’s face it, hockey and beer go hand in hand. Both are best enjoyed cold, with friends. If one continues playing hockey into adulthood, it’s simply referred to as beer league. Since the days of Gordie Howe, hockey has been associated with the Molson’s and Labatt’s of the world. But that’s about to change, as the best sport on earth just dropped the gloves with the best beverage on earth for a new collaboration. Dogfish Head Craft Brewery has teamed up with Philadelphia Flyers forward Garnet Hathaway to bring Engine 19 IPA to life.

Garnet Hathaway is a Flyer, through and through. He may not be a top line, dangle, dazzle, bar down, all-star sniper, but he’s a dog. A true Broad Street Bully. A presence on the ice, he gives his all, every shift. He finishes checks. He stirs the pot, or in this case, the brew kettle. Engine 19 IPA weighs in at 6.5% ABV. Simcoe, Chinook and Citra hops present piney aromas and citrusy flavors. It pours a clear and enticing coppery, almost Flyers orange, color. Like a good ol’ fashioned hip check, it’s crushable.

Drink Good, Feel Good

For years, Dogfish Head has been giving back to its local communities through its Beer & Benevolence program. Sam Calagione, Dogfish Head Founder & Brewer (and occasional hockey player) shares “we’re super excited to see how drinkers respond to Engine 19 IPA. Together, we’ve crafted one heck of a beer that not only tastes good, but it does good!” Win-win.

Proceeds from Engine 19 benefit Hath’s Heroes, Hathaway’s initiative created to support first responders and their families. On the Fly Productions, the Flyers’ in-house content team, captured the collaboration process, giving fans a behind the scenes look at how Engine 19 IPA turned from concept to reality.

The beer is hitting taps and shelves throughout Delaware and Pennsylvania starting in September. The official launch party is on September 10 at PHS Beer Garden South Street in Philadelphia. Engine 19 IPA will also be available at Xfinity Mobile Arena during Flyers home games this season. Let’s raise a cup to that.
