Stouts arenít typically found on the menu when the weather gets warm, so the heavy, late-season rains in Utah created a perfect excuse to finish the last ones that were hiding out in my refrigerator. T.F. Brewing in Salt Lake City, UT had a perfect pairing in mind for the dark and cloudy skies with Delmar, an 11.5% ABV American imperial stout. With that distinctive crack of the can, I couldnít wait to break this one down.
Breweries across the nation have entered an epoch of mass experimentation. Classic Lagers have given way to the Haze Craze, and every next head brewer is trying to out-do the last. While these pioneers have been a driving force in expanding our perceptions about what a beer can be, Utah continues to lag. Old Man Winter is waking up. With a dramatic inhale, the air is flowing in like a tide. We get a moment of calm at the apex, followed by the full rush of winter frost signaling the changing of the seasonal guard. The ice sentinels are lumbering in, flanked by soldier pines to plant their totem, a proclamation that winter has taken over.

However, Big Bad Baptist,†their iconic barrel-aged stout,†has become the centerpiece that preaches to the ethos of both categories.
Going to the Great American Beer Festival (GABF) in Denver, Colorado is an incredibly exciting experience. However, it can also be cruel and unrelenting if you are not prepared for it. The opportunity to sample rare and specialty beer from across the country is a dream for craft beer enthusiasts. But just like any good dream, it also has the ability to turn into a nightmare. Here is my survival guide to ensure you get the best experience out of your time next year. Trust me, I survived all four sessions from September 20 -22.
Letís face it, when you are planning a vacation around beer, Utah isnít usually at the top of the list. The liquor laws that dictate ABV and where you can consume may deter serious beer drinkers before even firing up an Airbnb search. However, Utah beer has a character of its own, a character that is both quiet and formidable all at once: A sleeping bear that is slow to wake but indomitable when angered. As such, let’s dispel some of the myths surrounding Utahís beer culture.
