Beerstagrams 3/15- 3/22

March 22, 2013 |

It is here again: March Madness. For many reasons this description is accurate. All of a sudden a basketball team you’ve never followed or cared about can cause you to rip out your hair and curse loudly in your office while your co-workers roll their eyes at you. A spark of competition in even the most unlikely contestants arises when they realize they have just as good of a chance of winning the office pool by picking their favorite mascots. But it is also a time, like so many other festive occasions, where people come together to drink beer. And hopefully good beer at that! This week features some stunner close-ups from Lara and David Brainer-Banker. Play close attention though- all is not as it first appears 🙂 Instagrammer craftbeerindychick also shows us an example of the proper way to watch the NCAA tournament (that is, 3 screens and an IPA in hand). So may the best- or in some cases, just luckiest- team win, and hope you have a few cold ones ready for when that #12 overthrows the #5 that you picked. It will ease the pain, and you will probably keep more of your hair.

So now that we’ve recovered from Green Beer Day, it’s time to move on to St. Patty’s Day! Too much green beer never hurt anyone…. right?….

Beerstagrams 3/1- 3/8

Chances are if you’re reading this you’re not one of the thousands of Miami students headed down to Panama in a packed Jeep for Spring Break, head still thumping from alcohol withdrawl after the most epic day of the year. For anyone who doesn’t know about Green Beer Day, don’t worry- Tristan wrote a story about it so you can educate yourself on this amazing tradition. Several of us here at PorchDrinking.com are Miami Alums, and may have confused our co-workers yesterday when we arrived to work wearing a green t-shirt from 2007 and shouting “IT’S GBD!!!!!!!” Luckily, I worked at the same company last year so they knew what to expect. But for us graduates of the official work-hard-play-hard school (it’s in the recruitment video, no joke), GBD in the real world is really about finding ways to connect back with fellow Miami grads and have a few moments of nostalgia. So even if you aren’t headed to a beach for a week off of work, at least take your weekend to celebrate the good things in life:  good traditions, good friends, and of course- good beer.

I give you fair warning- if you are grossed out by the majority of the photos from your high school science textbook then you might want to be careful when viewing this post. For some, particularly home brew enthusiasts, Brett’s pellicle might be a thing of beauty. I, however, have somehow never had the stomach for things like this. So if anyone out there is like me, don’t worry- I threw in a nice, calming shot from my Friday night at the local live jazz joint you can skip right to. It’s also been a little rough weather-wise this week, so if you need a good beer for your snow day, check out the (insert Milton from Office Space voice here) Red Swingline IPA. Hopefully the weather will cooperate this weekend so you can get out there and enjoy a craft beer weekend!

Phew. Now that Valentine’s Day is over, we can get back to the actual loves of our lives: BEER. With all the stress of trying to find the perfect card, dinner reservation, gift…. oh wait, I didn’t do any of that.

This week on Beerstagrams, we are reminded that even though the Super Bowl sponsors try to claim this to be the biggest drinking holiday of the year, a good craft beer can make any occasion better. While Bud Light was trying to one-up it’s 2012 commercials, we were chatting over Renegade Triple IPA waiting for the lights to come back on. While the trivia team next to us struggled to name the 7 children from the Sound of Music, I sat back smirking as I sipped on Trinton’s Sin-Bin. And as the days get slowly longer and warmer, there’s nothing better than a victory beer after a long hike. So this weekend whether you’re hiking, bowling, skiing, sitting at a bar, or watching the game– grab a craft beer. You can thank us later.

This week’s Beerstagrams are keeping it simple. No Breweries. No Selfies. Just Beer.

But man are they good ones! Whether you’re looking for a sour, IPA, stout, or porter- we have highlighted a few stand outs for you to try during your weekend’s festivities. Crazy Mountain coffee stout might actually be too pretty to drink- so we made sure to get a picture first. Lugene Chocolate Milk Stout from Odell Brewing is not quite as amazing as the leftover milk at the end of a bowl of Cocoa Puffs… but then again, what is?! And Trinity Brewing’s Slap Yer Mammy IPA is picture perfect (foam mustache sold separately). So get out there and find a new favorite- Happy Friday!!

This week’s Beerstagrams are an ode to none other than– The Beer Glass. No matter what form it may take, there’s just something about a good pour that makes any brew better. I know that even when I sit down for a beer in my own apartment, I always reach for my favorite Colts pint glass I conveniently “borrowed” from a local bar. We can all appreciate fancy labels and witty comments on a good beer bottle, but at the end of the night what we really want to “borrow” is the glass they poured it in. Special appearances by Great Divide Yeti Imperial Stout, New Belgium Springboard and Avery Depuceleuse. While you’re at it, don’t forget to check out some awesome behind-the-scenes shots of the Vine St. Pub. So everyone raise your beer glass- and cheers to Friday!

This week’s Beerstagrams belong in a create-your-own-six-pack. First, Tristan and friends show us around the Big Beers Festival. Vail isn’t just for skiers anymore– the beer connoisseurs put their snifters to work checking out the latest from homebrewers and industry gurus. Special appearances by Dry Dock, Caution Brewing, Elevation Brewing and (of course) Avery Brewing. Next, take a trip across the pond as my company pays tribute to our resident Brit. Yes– we drink at work. Yes– you should be jealous. Yes– Robby’s homebrew was delicious. And finally, good luck not drooling all over your keyboard when you check out the beer inspired dessert submitted by Allison Hardy (sous-chef at Circle City Sweets in Indianapolis, IN).

First, Sonny Chan sends us on a mini-tour of Black Shirt Brewing in Denver. This place has some serious ambiance- it’s even too hip for photo filters. Country Boy Brewing shows PD.com some love, and the Midwest keeps it’s title of the Happiest Beer Drinkers as Quincy and I show off our love for our homeland.
