Have you ever been on a diet, but all of your friends are like master chefs or legitimate barebecue pitmasters? That’s kind of what it’s like working for PorchDrinking while you’re taking a brief break from beer. Trying to rest your weary liver while looking at what this crew’s been drinking over the past week is no easy feat.
So join me this week as we drink vicariously through the PorchDrinking team in this week’s What We’re Drinking.
It’s September. Instead of posting “Wake Me Up When September Ends” memes, fans have taken to the internet to remind people that the song is no laughing matter, and therefore, unmemeable. It’s about Billie Joe Armstrong’s father dying of cancer when he was 10. Sad. Because sadness is most of what the internet is used for these days.
What an age we live in where armchair social media dentists, pet experts, virologists, doctors, child psychologists and parenting experts can get together and combine their collective powers to suck the last remaining joy out of posts with dogs, babies, dogs and babies, or basically anything involving… anything <breathes in, breathes out>. It’s noon somewhere, as they say, and I clearly need to have a beer and chill. Here are some of the excellent beers the PorchDrinking crew’s been gettin’ at this week.
Around much of the country it’s looking like spring is right around the corner, or depending on where you are spring is already in full force. With spring comes patio beers, summit brews, and anything that involves being outside and enjoying a good beer. Not all of our staff has fully embraced the outdoors quite yet, but regardless of our activities, one thing we all have in common this week is enjoying great craft beer. This is what we’re drinking.
We all remember the first time we waited in an exceptionally long line for an exceptionally small pour of a notable beer. On a sunny SoCal day in May 2015, at The Bruery’s 7th Anniversary party, a beer from local upstart Bottle Logic Brewing named Fundamental Observation showed up like Lindsay Lohan as the new queen bee of The Plastics. An explosion of vanilla followed by the soft cuddle of high-end bourbon barrels, this beer was a delicious needle in the four hours of unlimited tastings haystack. With the next public release of this beer came a block-spanning line, providing a delicious 8oz reward for an hour of your time, and the first memory of waiting in extended anticipation for a single draught of excellence.
While checking the date for writing this post, it really hit me that half of the year is already over. I’m not sure I’m relieved or bummed about that. In six months this year has produced all sorts of hard times for multitudes of people. One thing I’m sure everyone can agreed on is that COVID-19 stole months of our lives that we’ll never get back. While that’s unfortunate, that should be all the more reason the seize the moment and live life to the fullest. Get out there and explore some new breweries or beer bars and support this industry that we all enjoy so much. This is What We’re Drinking.
