The OGs of Craft Beer | Magic Hat Brewing Company – #9

August 22, 2018 |

In writing this, I fired up the PorchDrinking DeLorean and visited our original showcase of #9 from 2012. Even though it’s way before my time with Tristan and the gang, reading the article was a nostalgia trip that perfectly reflects the reason #9 deserves its place in this series. Coit Stevenson is so excited just to get #9 in Colorado he barely remembers to review it. #9 was for many drinkers their first dabble into fruit beers and pale ales. With the market today practically drowning in Blood Orange as multi-fruit sours are available in any mid-level liquor store, it’s nice to remember a time when a little bit of magic, and some apricot, brought so much wonder onto your palate.

The Weekly Buzz | July 27 – August 2

August 3, 2018 |

Since we’re all gathered here around the Weekly Buzz hearth, allow Grandpappy Dan to spin a yarn about the good old days. A long time ago, fall seasonal beers — like pumpkin ales — used to be released in the fall, so that their warm spiciness and pumpkin sweetness could be enjoyed on cool autumn nights. Märzens (or Oktoberfests) would be released in September to coincide with Munich’s historic Oktoberfest festival, which runs from late September until early October. Much like the way certain big box chains stock bathing suits in February, these beers are releasing earlier and earlier. Does anyone really want to drink a Pumpkin Ale in July or August? I don’t believe that they do. Seasonality is a beautiful thing, but it is being lost as its lines are being blurred. If you don’t buy fall seasonals in August, they’ll stop releasing them in August.

Let’s make seasonal beers great again!

The Weekly Buzz | October 13 – 19

October 20, 2017 |

Another week has gone by, and I’ve spent too many hours on Twitter. I think it’s affecting my personality. I engaged a troll the other day, and I don’t even know why! Is there a 12-step program for  Social Media? I’m not saying that I have a problem, but, I mean, it’s pretty likely that I have a problem. Anyway… Here is some fun beer stuff that I found for you! Saddle up, dear readers! It’s time for The Weekly Buzz.

Magic Hat Brewing Co. | Single Chair Golden Ale

March 5, 2015 |

ABV: 5%
IBU: 17

March is here, which means Spring Skiing! After the abysmal weather on the east coast ruined three separate ski attempts, I’m FINALLY getting a chance to get on the slopes in the East Coast. While the East in general has a reputation for tighter runs and icier conditions, they balance that out with community minded hills and a bit more of hellfire spirit (how else do you explain Bode Miller?). Few places embrace that spirit more than Mad River Glen, who provide the namesake to Magic Hat’s Single Chair Golden Ale.

Beerstagrams 4/4-4/11

April 11, 2014 |

There’s a cheap map of the United States from Cracker Barrel hanging on my wall. It’s lined with road trips taken over the years. Lately, they’ve become beer trips. I can confidently say that craft beer and road trips go together like lamb and tuna fish or maybe spaghetti and meatball? #BigDaddy. Read More
