Red Rock Brewing | Secale
January 23, 2019 | Daniel AvilezOld Man Winter is waking up. With a dramatic inhale, the air is flowing in like a tide. We get a moment of calm at the apex, followed by the full rush of winter frost signaling the changing of the seasonal guard. The ice sentinels are lumbering in, flanked by soldier pines to plant their totem, a proclamation that winter has taken over.
The bitter cold drags us from the comfort of our warm weather beer. IPAs, pilsners and hefeweizens run, depleted, only to be replaced by the heavy palate crushers. Stouts and sours reign supreme in these times as people dig into their cellars in search of something more unrelenting than the weather. While we all love the bourbon barrel aged stouts with ABVs in the teens, there will always be something magical about the ever-crushable flavors of summer.
Dispelling the Myths Behind Utah’s Emerging Beer Scene
September 11, 2018 | Daniel Avilez 2Let’s face it, when you are planning a vacation around beer, Utah isn’t usually at the top of the list. The liquor laws that dictate ABV and where you can consume may deter serious beer drinkers before even firing up an Airbnb search. As such, let’s dispel some of the myths surrounding Utah’s beer culture. Read More
Ultimate 6er | A Guide to Utah Pils
July 27, 2016 | Chris & Sylvia HollandsAs I drive to meet a local brewer to learn about his most recent release, I think about the time we once asked another brewer what he felt was the ‘next big thing’ in craft beer. His reply: “German Pilsner.” This no doubt came as a bit of a shock. Berliner Weisse, session IPA, or even Imperial fruit beer would have all seemed appropriate. Instead, he picked a classic style originating from the Czech Republic in 1842. Interesting enough, we started noticing a trend: Friends working in breweries often mentioned pilsner as their go-to-beer. A few years ago there might not have been enough local quality pils to make an Ultimate 6er and although it hasn’t become the ‘next big thing’, it has made a resurgence. We give you a guide to Utah’s very own Pilsners. Read More
Red Rock Brewery | Rêve
February 23, 2016 | Chris & Sylvia Hollands
ABV 10.3%
Although Valentine’s day is over for another year, it’s good to continue reflecting on things we love. When a highly anticipated seasonal release of a favorite local offering just so happens to land during the same week of warm weather in the middle of winter, the combination deserves reflection. Because, 1) Warm weather means summer really is coming back, and 2) Exclusive beer releases with limited bottles really are ‘all the hype’ and you’ll feel damn lucky to have your hands on the prize. When both happen to mingle, it feels like a celebration. Read More
