When Punxsutawney Phil emerges from his slumber, the fate of the winter is in his furry little paws. Will spring come early, or will winter be sticking around for six extra weeks? This change in season doesn’t only affect the weather but also the beers that we’ll be drinking. Northeast Region Editor Dan Bortz and writer Constance Del Rio are about to engage in a verbal Battle Royale about whether or not they’d like the groundhog to see his shadow. This is the Great Groundhog Day Showdown!

If you’ve ever been to Burnt City Brewing, you know that they like to have fun. From the beer, to the bartenders, to the bowling alley in-house, I always enjoy my time whenever I visit. I definitely can’t wait to attend their Groundhog Day beer release event (no entry cover) on February 2 at Logan Theatre. The event is both a celebration of good beer and beloved Chicago Cubs fan Bill Murray who starred in the acclaimed 90’s movie the event gets its namesake after.

For us Ohioans, it is pretty obvious that this whole “Winter Wonderland” is going nowhere fast. It is February, but our good friend Phil the groundhog decided to bless us with 6 more weeks of cold and snow. Last Tuesday, Ohio University shuttered its doors due to extreme wind chills, giving me a gloriously unexpected day off work. (Thank you polar vortex.) While at the store shopping for dinner, Samuel Adams new seasonal brew, Cold Snap, caught my eye. It’s as if the fates had aligned! For those of you who don’t know, a cold snap is a meteorological phenomenon described as a period of intensely cold and dry weather. If that doesn’t describe what we’ve been experiencing here in the Midwest, I don’t know what does. I’ve never met a Sam Adams beer I didn’t like, so of course I had to buy it.
