Portside Distillery | Rusalka Vanilla Stout

Portside Rusalka Vanilla Stout
John Amantea

ABV 5.3%

This past week was insane. A flurry of activity at work, the mad rush to stores to get my last minute Christmas shopping in and fretting over whether the recipients of said gifts would like them resulted in me being burnt out by Friday evening. Amidst the flurry of holiday excitement and activity, I’m reminded of that enduring quote from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off: “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” So that’s what I did Friday night – I stopped, left the hysteria of the week and hung out with some friends.

I peeled myself off the couch and made my way downtown to watch Mount Union play for their 12th national championship (for those interested, they won 49-35 over St. Thomas). As I hunkered down at Panini’s to catch up and get ready to watch the game, I ordered a beer from a local Cleveland brewery, Portside Distillery. It was their Rusalka Vanilla Stout, and given the week I had, it was perfect for what I wanted to achieve – nothing.

Named for the mythical creature known to lure young men to rivers and lakes under the guise of a beautiful woman, Rusalka does just that. Its vanilla flavor is not overwhelming, but pronounced enough to keep you wanting more. And I did. Combining the vanilla with a smooth finish makes Rusalka very drinkable and enjoyable stout, ideal for taking it easy and having a good beer.

As the year winds down and you’re working to make it through the holidays alive, take time for yourself and your loved ones. Kick back, relax and reach for your favorite beer to enjoy. Happy holidays, everyone. Cheers!
