Event Preview | What’s Lupulin & Why They Got It Wrong In 1909

What the heck is a Lupulin? It’s a question many St. Louis beer fans began asking in 2012 at the first annual 4 Hands Brewing Company’s Lupulin Carnival.

Some exhaustive research we dug up this gem: From the 1909 – ‎United States Committee of Reference in Pharmacy Report on Lupulin:

“Presumably this drug will be omitted, as it is practically never used.”

It appears that Lupulin, as a drug, wasn’t cutting it so the experts decided it had no use. But it may have influenced American lexicon. Legend is that doctors from the early part of the 20th Century used Lupulin, which is the yellow, pollen like material found in Hop plant cones, as a sedative. Patients who were given Lupulin were described as “loopy.”

A lot has changed more than a century later. Now we celebrate the “loopy” Lupulin in St. Louis with an annual party complete with carnival acts, food trucks, games and even a ferris wheel will take over the street in front of 4 Hands Brewing Co on April 2, 2016 from 2-6pm.

Lupulin Carnival also marks the annual release of Warhammer, an Imperial IPA. At 9 % ABV and 83 IBUs Warhammer is a local favorite that pours a deep golden color with nice fruitiness. But if you really want to know what it tastes like, just look at the label artwork. A pile of fresh hops exploding.

To really make a party out of it, a variety of out of state and local breweries will gather at 4 Hands to offer samples of the their work and engage in the wide variety of carnival entertainment.

Beyond the beer, guests will have carnival acts such as fire breathers, fortune tellers and acrobatics scattered throughout the event creating an entertaining and energetic atmosphere.

Some local, St. Louis favorite food trucks and vendors will be there serving up delicious food throughout the day. Carnival games will be available to play with all proceeds being donated to Winter Outreach, a St. Louis non-profit that helps St. Louisans obtain proper housing.

And yes, the ferris wheel will return this year, so folks can overlook the carnival, the brewery and the fabulous St. Louis skyline.
