PA State Representative Mehaffie Becomes Brewer For a Day
On July 17, the Brewers of Pennsylvania hosted Pennsylvania State Representative Tom Mehaffie for their latest Brewer For A Day event at Tröegs Independent Brewing in Hershey, PA. This was the eighth event in a series that is intended to give state legislators a hands-on, insider’s perspective on the brewing process, as well as further educating them on the economic impact of craft brewing in the Commonwealth.
As a part of the Brewer For A Day program, Representative Mehaffie toured the brewery, added hops to the kettle and interacted with the automation systems that help Tröegs’ brewers produce some of Pennsylvania’s most popular craft beers.
“It was a pleasure for Tröegs to host our local representative, Tom Mehaffie, as the BOP’s latest Brewer For A Day,” said Chris Trogner, co-owner of Tröegs. “Tom joined us for a tour, and added first hops to our chocolate stout. As a business owner and now public representative, he understands the challenges and rewards of growing a small business.”
Mehaffie represents Pennsylvania’s District 106 in Dauphin County and also owns Breski Beverage in Harrisburg.
“Tröegs Brewing Company was one of the first on the Central Pennsylvania craft beer scene, and seeing firsthand how their business has grown over the last twenty years is evidence of the growth of the microbrewery industry as a whole,” said Rep. Mehaffie. “I enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about its operations in Derry Township, which employs 220 outstanding individuals, and I look forward to working with Tröegs and other breweries in my district to ensure this unique industry continues to thrive.”
Previous Brewer For A Day participants include:
- Senator Rafferty (PA District 44)
- Representative Kurt Masser (PA District 107)
- Senator Sean Wiley (PA District 49)
- Representative Harry Lewis Jr. (PA District 74)
- Representative Adam Harris (PA District 82)
- Representative Paul Costa (PA District 34)
- Representative Mike Carroll (PA District 118)
- Senator John Yudichak (PA District 14)
- Representative Aaron Kaufer (PA.District 120)
- Representative Dave Reed (PA District 62)
The BOP and its members will take advantage of the popularity of the Brewer For A Day program by hosting many more events throughout 2017.
In July, 2016, Pennsylvania Governor, Tom Wolf, signed a $1.3 billion revenue package. Part of that package included a Malt Beverage Tax Credit not to exceed $5 million annually. The tax credit, matching equipment and facilities investments made by applicant breweries, has been one of the BOP’s top legislative goals since 2013. The BOP fully supports this tax credit measure and considers it a major victory for all craft breweries in the Commonwealth, particularly smaller breweries as the benefits of the measure is capped at $200,000 per year, per brewery.
