What We're Drinking
Anna Dacosta

Picking up a new hobby or craft is pretty common during the Summer, but if your latest DIY project was a huge fail, fear not and let craft beer become your new hobby; it’s ours! It is guaranteed to be more relaxing than getting rained on while painting the house or the “new” Summer deck that became a hazard area at your last BBQ. The PorchDrinking staff’s got your back and have plenty of beers to share in this week’s What We’re Drinking.

Trappist Achel | Brouwerij der St. Benedictusabdij de Achelse

I breathed a sigh of relief when I discovered a Trappist had finished in first place in our tasting. Order was restored to the universe. Achel 8° Bruin is one of the more overlooked Trappist beers, but wow is it lovely. No one at the table ranked it lower than 2nd out of the 10 beers. A mildly hazy reddish tone brought to mind the darker patches on a peach peel, and the aroma did carry some mild stone fruit, along with hay, raisin, and subtle floral perfume. The flavor initially brought to mind Twizzlers for me right off the bat, before deepening into licorice root and earthy spice. The finish was full, lightly sweet, and mildly boozy, but not roughly. A beautiful beer, and one I will be giving more attention to in the future. Phenomenal. If you want to learn more about Trappist beer, check out the book @trappistbeertravels by Caroline Wallace, Sarah Wood, and Jessica Deahl. I had the chance to interview these three ladies about the beer for PorchDrinking last year, and I absolutely loved the book.

Booming Rollers | Modern Times Beer

Modern Times is one of my favorite non-Colorado breweries, and I’m stoked we get a bit more distribution here now. If it’s this good from the can, I bet it’s amazing on tap. #BoomingRollers – Seth Garland

Thermo | Pueblo Vida Brewing
