Richmond, VA is known to some as a mecca for craft beer in the state for lovers. Ardent Craft Ales was originally started as a cooperative of homebrewers who wanted to get out of their kitchen and brew a little more seriously. To do so, they rented out a garage with a half-barrel system and started brewing every Sunday in said garage located in the Churchill region in the eastern side of the city.
In a world filled with outlandish new beer style varieties, sometimes you just want a classic style: something without all the bells and double dry-hopping. After a long day, no matter the season or temperature, a stout sounds like a nice way to end my evening. I escaped my Oakland/Berkeley/Hayward/San Leandro bubble the other weekend and made my way up to Richmond (it’s really not that “far”) and I was a happy lady! East Brother Beer Co. is nestled over by Point Richmond and has the classic beer style game down. That’s their schtick: classic styles done well.
Science is the cornerstone to brewing beer. Although many of our craft beer events are centered around performers or special beer releases, it’s nice to see these gatherings celebrating the study of our favorite beverages. That’s the goal of “Science on Tap,” an outdoor festival for educating beer novices and aficionados alike on beer chemistry. And there’s no better place to have this event than at the heart of Virginia’s largest craft beer community, our capital Richmond.
Instead of bringing you a bunch of small beer news stories, this week I’m bringing you four HUGE beer news stories. As an added bonus, most of them have videos included just in case you don’t feel like reading today. To sum it up: Dogfish Head promoted a new CEO, Stone announced its new brewery location, New Holland broke ground on a new site, and breweries are teaming up to bring us cleaner water.
