Double Fist Friday: Two Beer Releases @ Bruz Off Fax (Denver) – 1495 York St, Denver, Colorado

Date/ Time: Friday, January 24, from 11:00 a.m. –11:00 p.m.

Details: TWO NEW BEER RELEASES ‘Off Fax Only.

We’re releasing not only the first new recipes our new brewer Dave Olson created for us… they are also our first collaboration with Jensen Cummings and his Good Bugs Fermentation Projects.

These two beers are a split batch fermentation project we’ve dubbed The Homonym Series. So obviously we named these with French homonyms.

• La Reine (The Queen) 5.5% abv 14oz draft $5.75
• Le Renne (The Reindeer) 5% abv 14oz draft $5.75

—–Double Fist Friday only special!!! 2 – 14oz draft $9—–
Try them side by side

We start with a fairly simple base of 2 row Barley, Spelt, and Flaked Oats. We follow that with a decent kettle hopping, blending some old world noble hops with some more modern “flavor” hops with parentage of noble variety. From the kettle we split this into two separate but distinct fermentation’s; In one, we ferment with a Norwegian Kviek Farmhouse yeast strain allowing a free rise (hot) fermentation, and the other, a blend of Belgian saison strains, also with a free-rise (hot) fermentation. During and after fermentation we dry-hopped both beers identically with Huell Mellon and Hallertau Blanc hops. The results very clearly show the vast flavor spectrum yeast can impart in a beer. Maybe even more than any other ingredient, yeast is beer.

• La Reine (The Queen) 5.5% abv – Saison yeast
The Queen is a very dry and fruit forward hoppy Saison style beer. Fruit smells like pears, green grape skins, and honeydew melons up front with background phenolics of white pepper, and hay. By far the hoppiest beer Bruz has made yet, we dry-hopped this beer with Hallertau Blanc and Huell Melon which give strong pear, white wine, and honeydew melon or unripe mango.

The flavors are delicate and perhaps fleeting, especially given the how dry the beer is. It won’t linger on the pallet, but the delicate complexity will present itself in a way that you desperately want another sip to see if you really did get the flavor of green grapes or hint of hay.

__

• Le Renne (The Reindeer) 5% abv Kviek yeast
The Reindeer is a fuller bodied (but still dry) hoppy beer made with Norwegian Kviek yeast. This one has an even fruitier nose with orange marmalade, cantaloupe, pears and green grapes. The same hopping schedule as The Queen this one is more like an American IPA-style beer with Hallertau Blanc and Huell Melon hops that are very Pear-like, white wine, and melon characters.

This beer is dry, but not as dry as The Queen so the hops and malt will be a little more “obvious” and will hang out on the pallet for slightly longer. This one will present much more like a modern American IPA. Low bitterness and high hopping rates that should give a nice fruitiness that is expected in a modern American IPA.
