Pipeworks Brewing | Jones Dog Sundae: A Stout for Summer

Pipeworks Brewing | Jones Dog Sundae: A Stout for Summer
Paul Lewis

Jones Dog Sundae from Chicago’s Pipeworks Brewing Company is a stout made for summer drinking. This sweet milk stout with natural flavors comprised of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry was brewed to be the boozy, liquid version of Neapolitan ice cream — the perfect warm weather treat!

Exceptional stouts are an easy find in Chicago, especially during the windy, bitter cold winter months. So, when the weather turns warm and sunny, something most Chicagoans tend to cherish, a sweet milk stout is usually not the typical go-to for day drinking outside in the summer heat. Nonetheless, after a day of grilling one’s favorite meats (Vienna Beef Ditka Brand Polish Sausage, perhaps), one can easily turn to Pipeworks Jones Dog Sundae as the perfect accompaniment to a summer dessert such as ice cream or strawberry shortcake.

ABV: 8%

The stout pours like a thick, creamy milkshake. The color is jet black and it is complemented with a minimal brown head that dissipates quickly. One’s nose picks up the sweet flavors of vanilla and strawberry right away. Bitter chocolate and roasted coffee are easily detected with the first sip. This fades into a long finish, where the flavor of strawberry kicks in and lingers on the tongue. The vanilla flavor is there, but not nearly as pronounced as the chocolate and strawberry.

Pipeworks has developed quite a cult following in the Chicago area since the brewery first started operations in 2012. Now distributed to eight states, the brewery specializes in small-batch beers that focus on utilizing creative ingredients intended to stand out among Windy City’s already crowded craft beer shelves. This specialty stout is no exception. However, this unique, sweet stout only comes along once a year, or possibly never again, because Pipeworks is known for its creativity and innovation including cooking up new stouts that surprise and please the senses, so don’t waste time trying to find this neat treat.

Here’s to summer!
