Upland Brewing Company | Champagne Velvet Pilsner

September 29, 2014 |

ABV: 5.50% | IBU: 29

After a long week at work, I felt I needed something light and simple to drink. While pilsners are usually one of styles of beer I avoid, I’ve found plenty of pre-prohibition style beers that surpassed my expectations. When I realized that Champagne Velvet was originally released as a part of Upland Brewing Company‘s 15th anniversary, I was intrigued by this modern take on the early 1900s beer that originally put Indiana brewing on the map.

Drink Locally. Be Pretentious Globally: My Interview with Adam Cayton-Holland

August 21, 2014 |

Adam Cayton-Holland, one third of Denver’s the World’s best comedy show The Grawlix, has been on one hell of a run. After performing on Conan and The Pete Holmes Show, Adam followed it up with an appearance on @midnight and throwing the first pitch out at a Colorado Rockies game. Adam has been creating his own path to success by staying in his hometown, the beer mecca of Denver, instead of following the traditional path for entertainers: moving to either New York or LA.

Adam took some time out of his busy schedule writing, podcasting, and planning the upcoming High Plains Comedy Festival (starring T.J. Miller, Kumail Nanjiani, Pete Holmes and dozens more) to discuss the beer scene in Denver, brew options on the road and much more.

The Ultimate Community 6er | 6 Saisons And A Movie

August 13, 2014 |

Newton’s law of motion was eerily similar to my law of emotion when it came to the cancellation and revival of my favorite show on TV, Community. My initial grief was only matched with my elation when the show was picked up by Yahoo! a few weeks later.

For those uninitiated people that don’t know Community, it is a hilarious show that follows the adventures of a group of community college students in Colorado. In honor of the best mainstream sitcom for nerds that will obviously last for the prophesied 6 seasons and a movie, I decided to find the saison that best represents each member of America’s favorite study group (RIP Pierce). People’s Brewing Company | Mound Builder IPA

July 16, 2014 |

ABV: 6.50%
IBU: 88

I am proud of my home town. Being from a small, tight-knit community, in rural Indiana, it is difficult to share the greatness with people in Denver. For such a small place, I am very impressed with the local breweries. Both Lafayette Brewing Company and People’s Brewing Company make quality and tasty beer, but I was never able to bring it back to Denver with me … until now.

Milwaukee Brewing Company Hop Freak Double IPA

June 20, 2014 |

ABV: 8.70%
IBU: 80

Writer Ritu Ghatorey said “Sometimes You Need To Look At Life From A Different Perspective.” And she was right, which is why I am going to do two reviews in one. I was able to try Hop Freak in 2 different formats in 2 different settings. My first experience was a draft of Hop Freak on the patio deck at Milwaukee Brewing Company overlooking the Milwaukee River on a hot Milwaukee summer day. My other experience with Hop Freak was out of a can on a cold, rainy Denver night. Both experiences were delicious, but very different.

Elysian Brewery | Savant IPA

June 12, 2014 |

ABV: 6.30%
IBU: 66

I am not a scientist and I rarely claim to be, but there has to be research available that proves that people love monkeys. I was at Hugo’s, my local beer store, trying to judge a beer by its label and make the impossible decision: Elysian’s DayGlow IPA with a tiger shooting rainbow lasers out of its eyes or Elysian’s Savant IPA with a monkey in glasses painting a picture. My past experience with Elysian has revolved around their incredible fall pumpkin beers, which made me appoint Elysian my beer of the evening for a rainy Wednesday night.

I was a fan of Former Future Brewing Company months before they served their first beer to the public. In fact, it all began with the latest trend of bringing it to the people through crowd funding as a means to launch the brewery. That campaign launched on Kickstarter and I knew I become a Former Future Brewing Company fanatic.

Former Future Brewing Exterior
H/T: Laura Graham

While brewing beer in Colorado is nothing new, Former Future takes a different approach from most breweries. Starting with its origins, of using the power of the internet to raise the money needed to make their hop-soaked dreams come true. Husband and wife duo James and Sarah Howat take old-fashioned beer recipes and throw in a modern twist to create exceptional beers that are familiar, but different. Read More
