Brew Gentlemen – PorchDrinking.com
I’m back from vacation and gotten back to my daily grind. After one shift at work, I’ve decided that it is already time for another holiday. Why is that first day back always so hard? I can’t even drink beer to cope because I’m trying to undo the damage that I did with a week of seafood buffets and booze. Luckily, “Beer Twitter” was actually pretty fun this week! Here’s all the shenanigans worth sharing. It’s The Weekly Buzz!
The wonderful team at PorchDrinking has challenged me to explore the marriage between beer and sports. I’ll be your sports and beer tour guide each week as we take a closer look at some of these events. What’s the local beer scene like? What can you do around the stadium? What’s the one food you must try? To kick things off, we’re starting in the Steel City of Pittsburgh for this weekend’s NFL Playoff game between the Steelers and Jacksonville Jaguars.
This week was rough. The frigid weather broke in Pennsylvania and brought 40-degree weather to Pennsylvania. The reprieve, however, revealed a frozen, burst hot water pipe, which became a massive leak as it thawed. I mostly tell you this because I want your pity. feed on it. Also, I don’t want you to notice that The Weekly Buzz is embarrassingly light this week. Shit happens. We’ll all move past it and do better next week.
As a civilization of internet-savvy beery drinkers, we have no shortage of seemingly random, unofficial holidays to celebrate, but there is none more vital to our palates than National IPA Day.
Falling on the first Thursday of August, National IPA Day gives us all a chance to hoist a glass in remembrance of our favorite Single, Double, Imperial, Triple, Session and New England-style hop bombs. This day also affords us the opportunity to seek out new hop-forward variations to enjoy.
Braddock, Pennsylvania was once a thriving borough in Pittsburgh’s eastern suburbs, but the decline of the steel industry in the 1980s forced businesses to close and people to leave. Today, there are still more empty storefronts than occupied ones, but in the former electrical supply store at 512 Braddock Avenue, the lights are on and business is bustling. That building is now occupied by Brew Gentlemen, and this brewery is definitely drawing visitors to Braddock.
It’s officially summertime and that means we’re drinking all sorts of… well hell, we’re still drinking everything! We love well-made lagers, fruity wheats and sours, and the occasional high-octane IPA. Give us all the beers! The holiday weekend may be upon us, but that didn’t slow us down this week. This is What We’re Drinking.
I didn’t think the PorchDrinkers were sampling much beer this week. However, when I asked around, I learned that they had been drinking a ton of great beer. As it turns out, they were just having too much fun! They didn’t want to spoil it by sending pictures to the lame What We’re Drinking guy. They’re just too dang cool to be associated with a wet blanket like me. I get it. While I’m in my room eating a gallon of ice cream by myself, feel free to peruse this week’s What We’re Drinking. You can let yourselves out when you’re done. I don’t think you want to talk to me anyway.
Another week has flown by, and the PorchDrinkers have been enjoying lots of beers. So many beers. The best beers. Whether you’re looking for new brews to taste or wistfully dreaming away your last workday before the weekend, you’ll find what you seek right here. Lean back in your office chair, set your phone to “Do Not Disturb”, and prepare to discover What We’re Drinking.
It seems like I’m the only PorchDrinker who didn’t have an amazing week of craft beer enjoyment. Instead, I had to work lots of overtime because my coworkers were all pretending to be snowed-in in the aftermath of winter storm Stella. I’ve also managed to get sick again. It feels like my esophagus is being shredded with razor blades every time I swallow. This week I’m on the outside looking in as I bring you What We’re Drinking.
