Mexican beer has come a long way from the thin-bodied, flavorless yellow beverage chugged poolside on spring break. These days there’s a burgeoning Mexican craft beer scene featuring the robust and flavorful styles that craft beer lovers are familiar with.
Head to any Mexican town and you’re bound to see signs in bars and on the street advertising Pulque alongside beer and Micheladas. Although this beverage is completely foreign to most U.S. travelers, it’s well worth seeking out for a true down and local Mexico culinary experience.
With summer weather starting to emerge, it felt like the perfect time to visit Dos Luces Brewery located on South Broadway in Denver. In the bright and colorful taproom, co-owner and brewer Judd Belstock explained the brewery’s passion for celebrating the cultural heritage of the Americas and using alternative grains to create Peruvian-style Chicha beer and Mexican Pulque.
October brings with it many things: changing leaves, the full onslaught of pumpkin beers and the end of outdoor parties. But my favorite part of October is, after the buzz of GABF, getting my hands on the Michigan medal winners. Luckily Michigan is a large enough brewing state that at least someone within a 30 minute drive will win something. This year, Brew Detroit snagged an International-Style Pilsner Bronze with Cerveza Delray, named after the beleaguered neighborhood just south of Mexicantown that is currently home to a lot of pollution but will soon welcome the Gordie Howe International Bridge (a welcome addition to everyone besides a company that is the literal embodiment of a bridge troll).
Currently, I am in Mexico on a boozy retreat and wanted to share a recipe that highlighted some flavors of the south. I went to a bunch of a grocery stores and liquor stores to try to find the perfect craft beer. The craft beer scene in Mexico is on the rise but many small breweries are having to pay a hefty tax so it is hard to find these beers distributed in local beer stores. I did however find a craft beer out of Monroe, Wisconsin from the Minhas Craft Brewery called Seasonal Bad Hare Amber Ale. This beer has an ABV of 5.5% and is recommended for everyday drinking, food pairing and sipping.
