Strong BA Series | Warped Wing Whiskey Rebellion

December 14, 2020 |

Warped Wing Brewing Company’s taproom on an uneven brick side street in downtown Dayton, Ohio, is pretty quiet for early December. The hulking, 80-year-old concrete building that once housed the Buckeye Iron & Brassworks foundry is normally humming with beer drinkers, and on the early December Saturday when the brewery’s beloved Whiskey Rebellion bourbon barrel-aged Imperial Stout is released, the cavernous facility is always packed with celebratory fans. A line begins early that morning waiting for bottle allotments and extends through the cracked cement of the parking lot, past the building, and around the corner of the block.

This year’s release, of course, is different, though the enthusiasm for it is as vibrant as ever.

What We’re Drinking | November 13, 2020

November 13, 2020 |

We know it’s Friday the 13th in 2020. But we’re choosing to be optimistic. There’s no need to be a half-glass full kinda person when you can easily keep your beer glass full no matter what level of color-coded panic we’re currently living in. The only color that matters is the color of the beer you’re drinking today. What’s in your glass? Here’s What We’re Drinking this week.

What We’re Drinking | February 7, 2020

One down, eleven to go. We’ll be leaving stouts, porters, and barleywines behind and move onto crispier, easy drinking lawnmower beer as spring blooms. Keep an eye out for big IPAs dry-hopped with floral forward aromatic hops, and super citrusy hazy IPAs utilizing some new exciting hop varietals. With GABF having another new IPA category, expect to see more “Emerging” IPAs (Category 65) being brewed across the country. As for what we’re drinking?

On the night of May 27, a powerful line of storms ripped across Indiana and Ohio. Numerous tornadoes caused considerable damage. The Miami Valley region of southwest Ohio, centered around the city of Dayton, was hit especially hard. Multiple tornadoes left parts of the city and surrounding communities in shambles. Lives were disrupted and families were displaced.

In the wake of the storms, countless area businesses and individuals came together to help those affected by the disaster. Dayton’s breweries were no exception.

What We’re Drinking | October 27, 2017

October 27, 2017 |

Once upon a time, there was an intrepid fellowship of PorchDrinkers. They had to destroy a ring in a volcano (or something like that), but they could only truly break the ring’s evil curse if they drank every craft beer in America. What follows is an account of the battles they have fought and won during the past week. Fear not, dear readers, our heroes WILL complete their quest to free the world from its horrifying sobriety. This is What We’re Drinking.

What We’re Drinking | September 8, 2017

September 8, 2017 |

Labor Day has come and gone, and summer has gone with it. We now find ourselves taking our kids to school, choosing hot coffee over iced and watching terrified as another hurricane hurtles towards us. This hasn’t completely dampened our spirits, though, because we have something wonderful and uplifting. We have something that will lift us up and keep morale from plummeting too far. Don’t tell anyone, but our secret is beer. This is What We’re Drinking.

Event Recap | Warped Wing Trotwood Derby

August 1, 2017 |

One of the highlights of each year when I was between the ages of 10 and 12 was the annual AWANA Pinewood Derby (AWANA was like Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts for church kids—I had a weird childhood). I would give my dad an impossible car design on paper, he would do an impressive job of cutting that design from a three dimensional block of wood, and then on a Saturday morning in February—car in hand and hopes high—we would head to the track to get our asses squarely kicked. We never won anything and never came close, but it was a lot of fun. Read More

When the temperatures begin creeping into the 70s here in Ohio each spring, we begin shedding our winter coats and making plans for summer. As we put our fuzzy mittens into storage, we start opting less often for stouts and other heavy beers and reaching instead for lighter, sunnier fare. For those of us in the Dayton area, that often means Warped Wing Trotwood Lager.
