Beer: Elevation Beer Co. Fanboy Double IPA
Style: Double IPA Aged in Fresh Oak Barrels
Double IPA and wood aged may not be something you hear on a regular basis. You may even cringe a bit. You may say don’t age the hops, drink them fresh. Elevation Beer Company has gone and done just the opposite of that. They have created a wonderful Double IPA and put that liquid into fresh oak barrels while still retaining the wonderful fresh, bright hop characteristics. Elevation’s Fanboy Double IPA is a big bold IPA that has the great woody notes from the barrel. This Fanboy is Getting a Woody.

Stone Brewing Crime
Style: Bourbon Barrel Aged Strong Ale with Chiles
In November, I always look forward to when Stone releases their Double Bastard Ale. This has been one I always seek out. This year they have taken it to the next level. Stone has released three different versions that have been barrel aged. First, and tamest of the trio, Southern Charred which is their Double Bastard aged in various Bourbon Barrels. The next two really take the heat up. Bringing the fire, Stone’s Crime and Punishment are aged on an insane amount of peppers. This has created one crazy set-your-mouth-on-fire experience. So join me for the hottest Woody around, as I torch my taste buds with Stone Brewing Crime. Bring on the Pain!!
Goose Island Lolita
Style: Belgian Style Wild Ale
There are four sour women that have made their way into to town. These women have spent time aging in barrels and mingling with fruit. Gillian, Lolita, Juliet, and Halia are part of Goose Islands Vintage Ales that were recently put on shelves here in the Denver area. A few weeks ago on PorchDrinking we discussed our favorite beer labels and without a doubt in my mind these ladies take the cake.

Some great examples that have gone through this process are New Belgium La Folie, Petrus Aged Pale, Russian River Supplication, Today, we look Drie Fonteinen Oude Gueze Golden Blend.
Welcome to the second installment of Getting a Woody. In this article we will dive into the wide world of Bourbon Barrels. As stated in the last Getting a Woody, Bourbon Barrels were one of the first barrels used to age beer. Aging beer in these barrels creates a harmony between the wood and the beer producing slight hints of bourbon, oak, vanilla, and smoky flavors. Some great examples that have gonethrough this process are Bourbon County Stout from Goose Island, The Lost Abbey Angel’s Share, Odell’s Bourbon Barrel Stout, and Founders Kentucky Breakfast Stout. Today, we look at another beer from Founders Brewing that has enjoyed aging in Bourbon Barrels.
