What We’re Drinking

What We’re Drinking | November 6, 2020

November 6, 2020 |

Wow. Just wow. What a week it has been. I probably don’t need to tell you about the elections that are going on across the country. As of the moment of this writing, we’re all still waiting for the votes to be counted in Nevada and Arizona, as well as in Pennsylvania and Georgia. Needless to say, it’s been a long week and I think it’s probably best to keep this one short and sweet. Here’s to one of the most participated in elections in our history, and here is What We’re Drinking. Cheers.

Tomorrow is Halloween, and like most of the holidays this year, it’s going to look a little different. The people who normally dread trick or treaters coming to their house will rejoice. They finally have a great excuse not to answer their door. Hopefully everyone else can find a safe, socially distanced, fun option for their Halloween this year. While you’re on our site, be sure to check out some of our Halloween-inspired articles. This is What We’re Drinking. Read More

What We’re Drinking | October 23, 2020

October 23, 2020 |

Just when I thought fall weather and championships were coming to Georgia, I was let down. Again. It’s been 80 degrees on average and the Atlanta Braves are back home from the playoffs. Alas, that’s how it goes sometimes. This week seemed to be a little more relaxing for my counterparts as you’ll see from the nature views to the cozy autumn vibes. Everyone is busy now more than ever, and with the holidays approaching fast, let’s do our best to slow it down. In the meantime, here is What We’re Drinking.

The names of the days of the week have similar origins in Spanish and English — they’re named after Roman/Greek/Norse gods, for the most part. But Saturday is different. Saturday in English is named after Saturn (Roman god of agriculture), whereas Saturday, in Spanish, (Sábado), gets its origins from “sabbath” (or “shavat”) meaning “to rest.” We usually think of Sunday as the day of rest. But if you’ve ever wondered why we consider Sunday the first day of  the calendar week, now you know: Rest happens on the seventh day of the week, which is technically Saturday. Etymology is fascinating. So party it up tonight and rest tomorrow.

We’re also in the month of October — from the latin “octo” for eight. The eighth month. Except really it’s the 10th month, and nobody bothered to change it when we transitioned to the 12-month calendar circa 700 B.C. I feel that; I don’t change my clocks for daylight savings time. They’ll be right again in six months, so why bother. None of this has much to do with beer, but our brains could all use a break from politics. Anyway, it’s Friday, you’re done with the work week, and it’s time to crack open a few beers. Here’s What We’re Drinking this week.

Fall weather and a post-season push from the Atlanta Braves are making this month quite enjoyable here in Georgia. It has been a lot easier to find joy and happiness in small things in this ravenous year of 2020. COVID-19 and the presidential debates are prominent reminders of what is important right now and in the future. In the meantime, here is What We’re Drinking.

Fall is officially here and our lives are about to be taken over by pumpkin spice lattes, if they haven’t  already. Another way many beer lovers look at fall is that it kicks off Stout season with the cooler temps settling in. Seasonal food and drink can be a lot of fun and our crew here at PorchDrinking has been highlighting a seasonal beer lately — Oktoberfest beers. Check out some of our articles lately and give some seasonal offerings a try! Here’s What We’re Drinking. Read More

What We’re Drinking | September 18, 2020

September 18, 2020 |

We made it through another week, ya’ll! As we edge closer to fall and all it’s glory — spiced everything, pumpkins, dark beers, cooler weather, etc. — we should take time to reflect on the days that have passed already. It was only about six months ago that our country was hit by the COVID-19 pandemic, businesses closing and people being laid off. Now, many businesses are opening for outdoor seating, craft beer is seeing an uptick in brews being delivered to your door (which I hope never goes away!) and we’re seeing lower positive test rates. Our writers are busy covering virtual events  and releases, and need some tasty inspiration — here is What We’re Drinking.

What We’re Drinking | September 11, 2020

September 11, 2020 |

In a year that seems to have very few bright points, I’m finding positives in the smallest inconsequential things. Today, though, that is a shadowed piece of life as the country will stop intermittently to remember September 11, 2001 in different ways. Memories of that day are a variety of things for many people. If nothing else, we’re getting closer to wrapping up 2020 and putting it behind us. While we do that, here is What We’re Drinking.

Is the concept of time still a thing? How on earth is it already September? September means we’re in the fourth quarter of 2020. Let’s hope humanity can hit the buzzer beater and roll into 2021 with the win. Until then, here’s What We’re Drinking. Read More

What We’re Drinking | August 28, 2020

August 28, 2020 |

2020 seems to be the perfect example of one step forward, about a billion steps back. Nationwide there are still protests revolving around police brutality, and although sports have come back, they do not seem certain to last. Oh, and in the southeast, from Louisiana to Texas, there is a major storm headed on its way. Keep those people in your thoughts over the next few days. This trip around the sun has really been something, but for this week at least, here is What We’re Drinking.

Ultimate 6er | The Evil Villains Prefer Dark Beer

August 25, 2020 |

In the comics and movies, evil villains spend both day and night obsessing with how to topple our lives and destroy the good guys. However, after a long day of plotting and scheming, these villains still need a beer to help unwind. As you would imagine, many of them prefer brooding Stouts in one form or another: The darker side draws them in and makes them feel warm.

Even with some good news sprinkled into the news nowadays, like getting closer to a vaccine, we here in California are getting updates on nearly 400 fires throughout our state, evacuation notices, and unhealthy air quality to boot. Our team is trying to keep our spirits up by supporting local businesses and craft breweries when we can. Check out What We’re Drinking.

Some days it feels like 2020 is getting a little better. Other days it somehow seems worse. We’re doing our best to take it one day at a time around here, and hope that you are making it through 2020 anyway that you can. There’s been no shortage of beer news lately, and some sports are coming back. Everything feels like a give-and-take right now. Around the country schools and businesses are still dealing with COVID-19. Even though there’s a lot going on, we still made time to drink some awesome beers. Here is What We’re Drinking.

Here were are entering the fourth quarter of the year and things haven’t settled down yet or returned to normal. Who would’ve thought that would be the case five months ago? Anyway, off-premise alcohol sales continue to soar and that seems to be the one consistency over the last several months. This week our nation came together to celebrate one of the most time honored traditions, National IPA Day (August 6). This is What We’re Drinking to celebrate the holiday and some other non-IPA varieties. Read More

What We’re Drinking | July 30, 2020

July 31, 2020 |

August is around the corner, and for many of you that likely means the end of summer and those wonderful autumn days are approaching. That is very much not the case here in Georgia. Things are looking up, though. Well kind of. There still continue to be many highs and lows of 2020 as sports are back, but conversations about whether or not and how to reopen schools, breweries and public spaces remain. Civil Rights leader and legend John Lewis passed away this week, leaving a legacy of pressing towards equality and continuing the narrative of fighting for civil and human rights. Rest in peace, Mr. Lewis. To celebrate getting through the week, here is What We’re Drinking.

Don’t worry, this article is not cake. Apparently that is something we have to think about now; at least it’s nonsense and not a new “murder hornet” topic. Where I live we re-shut down a lot of businesses and today we now have some outdoor seating available again. What a week it’s been! Our staff has been keeping it chill with some tasty brews and getting some fresh air. Here is What We’re Drinking.

July 10, 2020 |

July usually is a month when we look forward to family gatherings, watching fireworks with friends and trips to mark the end of summer. Sadly, we are still in the midst of a global pandemic and have to put these plans on hold to ensure the spread of COVID-19 lessens. Some states have opened outdoor seating for breweries and some counties are cracking down on gatherings on beaches. Even Costco, at least where I live, isn’t making party platters since groups of 10 or more are discouraged. Set up a camping chair in your backyard, crack a cold one, and check out how our team is coping with another week in pandemic-land. This is What We’re Drinking.

It has been a busy and quite exhausting year so far, and these last two weeks have seemed no different. Even though there has been a lot of reopening nationwide, some places (including Georgia where I am) have had less success than others during this time. Many people have enjoyed that first draft pint while others wait still. For those of you waiting, stay strong. It will be worth it. In the meantime, here’s What We Have Been Drinking for the last two weeks.

While checking the date for writing this post, it really hit me that half of the year is already over. I’m not sure I’m relieved or bummed about that. In six months this year has produced all sorts of hard times for multitudes of people. One thing I’m sure everyone can agreed on is that COVID-19 stole months of our lives that we’ll never get back. While that’s unfortunate, that should be all the more reason the seize the moment and live life to the fullest. Get out there and explore some new breweries or beer bars and support this industry that we all enjoy so much. This is What We’re Drinking. Read More
