What We’re Drinking | May 26, 2017

May 26, 2017 |

Why doesn’t anyone ever remind me that a vacation with kids is not a vacation at all? I’m exhausted and need another vacation. Luckily, this is Memorial Day weekend! Once you add a vacation day into the mix and account for my unorthodox schedule, I’m looking at a 6-day weekend! Woot! Though there will be much beer consumption over the next few days, it’s now time to reflect on the beers that have already sacrificed themselves for our enjoyment over the last week. These beers are neither kid-tested nor mother-approved. This is What We’re Drinking.

May 12, 2017 |

I’m getting ready to go on vacation! My destination may not be a world-renowned beer town like Portland or Denver, but I’m sure I will find a way to enjoy some delicious craft brews. For those of you who are forced to stay home and endure your normal slog, I present you with a week’s worth of beer news and shenanigans. You can read The Weekly Buzz while you pretend to do your TPS reports. I, on the other hand, will be in Myrtle Beach drinking beer and pretending that I like the beach.

What We’re Drinking | March 31, 2017

March 31, 2017 |

Through no fault of our own, we didn’t get to post What We’re Drinking last week. The opposition party believes that this was caused by a vast international conspiracy. Luckily, the chairman of the House Beer Blog Oversight Committee assures me that there is nothing to worry about and has canceled all future hearings on the matter. We should be in the clear, as long as Fake Tears over in the Senate doesn’t dig too deep into this. In order to wipe this minor oversight from your minds, I present a special two-week edition of What We’re Drinking. Fake news!

Upslope Brewing Company | Ozo Coffee Brown Ale

August 18, 2015 |

ABV: 6.7% | IBU: 45

Upslope Brewing Company in Boulder has collaborated with beverage-makers hailing from as far as Northern Italy. Their Ozo Coffee Brown Ale, however, hits a little closer to home. Upon opening their second brewing location in East Boulder, Upslope wasted no time in collaborating with one of its new neighbors: Ozo Coffee Company. Ozo, another Boulder-based business, operates a café and roasting lab directly adjacent to Upslope’s Flatiron Park location. What resulted in this union is a liquid love child consisting of a two-time GABF medal winner and a massive amount of coffee beans. I was lucky enough to sit down with Upslope’s head brewer Sam Scruby to taste and discuss the origin of this roasty libation. Read More

Cooking with Beer | Fried Beer-Battered Avocados

April 27, 2014 |

Here it goes again, another recipe about Cooking with Beer. This one should really be called ‘The Trials and Tribulations of Frying Beer-Battered Avocados’ or ‘Kitchen Failures: Avocado Edition.’ Luckily, the saying held true and the third time really was a charm. Frying avocados sounded amazing but figuring out the right way to accomplish the task wasn’t easy. The first time around, the batter was too thick and I forgot some ingredients (so don’t drink too much before cooking). The second attempt, the batter still didn’t seem right and the avocados turned to mush. The third time, well, it was perfection. The batter was crispy and full of flavorful hops from the Upslope IPA. The avocados turned out to be just the right texture. These little crunchy green nuggets tasted great — probably even better to me since I finally conquered what seemed to be an impossible mission. But when you think about it, how could you ever go wrong when beer and avocados are involved?
