Council Brewing Co. | Beatitude Mango Tart Saison

March 10, 2016 |

ABV: 4.5%

The Beatitude series of Saisons by Council Brewing Company is kind of a thing in San Diego. That is to say that the fruity Saisons pop up in various kegs and bottles throughout the city with a distinct notoriety and a high demand. This beer has existed, to be exact, in Mosaic dry-hopped, Citra dry-hopped, raspberry, apricot, passion fruit, cherry, three berry, pineapple, blueberry and, of course, mango versions, all of which are bottle-conditioned. We discovered the Beatitude Mango fresh on tap when we visited the brewery location.

Funkwerks | Paisley Belgian-Style Brett Saison

February 12, 2016 |

ABV: 7%

Paisley is a beer from Funkwerks’ experimental series, packaged in a bright Paisley-decorated bottle that could have come from Pier 1 Imports rather than the liquor store. We were excited to try our first Funkwerks wild ale and popped it open with some anticipation. The beer poured into the glass a hazy golden orange color with delicate lacing. At first whiff there was a strong barnyard smell that immediately transitioned to tropical flavors including apricot, cherry, and spicy passion fruit aided by the Funkwerks’ house yeast strain. Sierra Nevada Brewing Co. | Otra Vez

February 10, 2016 |

ABV: 4.5%

We’d been searching for Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s newest release Otra Vez since we first saw it advertised on Beer Advocate. A Gose with prickly pear and grapefruit sounded like an amazing way to break up the past few months of winter warmers. After contacting liquor stores for weeks we finally were able to track a six pack down. Read More

Women in Brewing | Ali Benetka – Ratio Beerworks

January 5, 2016 |

Brewing has been a part of the world since the dawn of civilization; some have even claimed that beer has helped influence the evolution of our species. In many eras, brewing was largely a woman’s job. Men began to dominate the field starting in the Renaissance period and even more so during The Industrial Revolution as brewing operations scaled to mass production. Today Colorado is one of the biggest beer states in the country with cities such as Fort Collins, Boulder and Denver offering some of the best beer available. However, men still notoriously hold the title “brewmaster” more often than women. As females in the industry, we felt compelled to highlight some of the talented women who currently make Colorado beer, the paths they took to their currently role in the industry, and the awesome work they are doing on a daily basis.

Ultimate 6er | Must-try Beers from Belgium and Beyond

December 2, 2015 | 1

About three weeks ago we touched back down on U.S. soil after a whirlwind trip through Germany and Belgium. Against our better judgement, we managed 7 bottles of Belgian beer (both large and small) through 6 airports. It was a heavy experience, toeing the weight limit line on several occasions, and it was a moment of relief to unpack each intact, fizzy bottle in our kitchen. The trip was a fantastic one that we’re so grateful for. As a craft beer lover, most trips conveniently seem to involve a brewery or two, but the trip to Belgium was the king of all brew-centric journeys.

To those who want to take the trip – it may be closer within reach than you think. A flight to Europe is undoubtedly a financial setback, but traveling, eating and drinking your way around Belgium is fairly cheap, and the country is so small you can digest it all in a week or less, no problem. You will find yourself overwhelmed by amazing beer options at a price that is unfathomable for such rare gems.

Like a half-consumed beer bottle jolted the wrong way, the Denver beer scene is currently gushing over-excitedly with an abundance of frothy beer. But Denverites welcome the continuous surge; the mass influx of breweries has increased depth and complexity in an already vibrant beer culture. Among the metro-area newcomers is Goldspot Brewing Company which opened in February 2015 on 4970 Lowell Boulevard in Berkeley, near Regis University. It’s owned and operated by brewers Matt Hughes and Alex Sward. Read More

Five Points is proudly one of Denver’s oldest neighborhoods, located just blocks northeast of its downtown high-rises. The entire area is a large, sort of chicken-shaped chunk of mostly neighborhood housing that dates back as far as 1860. Five Points was first home to early Denver aristocracy, then later became more diverse (many black people moved there because home sale laws wouldn’t allow them elsewhere) while a rich jazz culture blossomed in the early 1900s. The 50 plus bars on Welton Street hosted jazz legends like Billie Holiday, Nat King Cole, Miles Davis and Duke Ellington (to name a few). After the jazz wave died down, the neighborhood vibe shifted. While many businesses and more affluent residents moved away, the jazz culture lived on through art and music still prevalent amidst the old streets and historic buildings.

Strange Craft Beer Company | Zora Rosemary Pale Ale

May 15, 2015 |

In honor of Strange Craft’s upcoming 5th Anniversary, we take a look back at their Zora Rosemary Pale Ale.

6.5% ABV, 55 IBUs

On an eighty-degree summer night, the back patio of Strange Craft Brewery in south downtown Denver is about as close to actual “porch drinking” as it gets. Copious amounts of good vibes, camaraderie and beer are present, and while the facade of the Strange entrance has a strip-mall feel, the patio’s warm industrial vibe feels almost Brooklyn-esque. Denver RTD trains even rush along the back fence every 10 minutes or so as if the Brooklyn J train de-railed and headed west of its own accord.

Uinta Brewing | Bristlecone Brown Ale

March 23, 2015 |

ABV 4%
25 IBU

One day, Uinta Brewery (you-INN-tah, to be perfectly clear on pronunciation), nestled between the Salt Lake City metro area and The Great Salt Lake itself, brewed a toasty, warm and earthen brown ale. It was delicious, and they christened it “Bristlecone” after the mighty, ancient alpine tree.

Squatters Brewery | Wellied Irish Style Stout

March 17, 2015 |

ABV: 4%  IBU: 15

Step aside, fiery shots of Irish whiskey; move away, dastardly rounds of Irish car bombs! If you find yourself in search of some easier drinking this St. Patty’s Day, Squatters Wellied Irish Style Stout is the perfect solution, especially if you or some friends want to partake in traditional Irish-style imbibing with a lower risk factor. For a jet-black style, this beer drinks light and easy, and with only 4% alcohol by volume, the decision is probably less likely to backfire on you the next morning.

Ultimate 6er | Positively Delicious Beers for the Negative Temperatures

January 28, 2015 |

Now that winter has settled in, I’m sure we’ve all enjoyed a winter warmer or two on a chilly evening. But given the onset of plummeting, freezing temperatures across the country, a new question arises: what beers to turn to in the midst of an arctic blast, wrapped in a blanket burrito while attempting to thaw out the very marrow in your bones?

When the temperatures drop and it hurts to breathe outside, stay inside and look no further than this list, which has been tested and proven effective in the midst of the most bitter Colorado cold. And make sure to serve them at a nice cellar temperature of at least 50 degrees Fahrenheit to help your body retain that precious heat!

Funkwerks Brewery | Nelson Sauvin Saison

January 9, 2015 |

ABV 7.5%
15 IBU
For a bright, cheery companion to our (faux) Turkey and savory side dishes this past holiday season, we looked no further than the Funkwerks Nelson Sauvin Saison that had been chilling in the back of the refrigerator for two weeks. It seemed the obvious choice – for one, the label boasted contents that “blur the line between wine and beer”, which seemed appropriately classy, and two, the gargantuan 750 ml Funkwerks bottle was leaving zero room for Thanksgiving groceries.

Almanac Brewing Company | Golden Gate Gose

November 10, 2014 |

Our first taste of Almanac beer occurred this year at Great American Beer Fest when we were conveniently pouring samples across from their booth. We were immediately intrigued when we realized that they featured several dynamically flavored sours and featured one of our favorite slogans: “Farm to Barrel.” Read More

Fat Head Brewery | Head Hunter IPA

August 27, 2014 |

ABV 7.5%
87 IBU
Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial
Pale, CaraMalt, C-15, Cara-Pils

We dismissed Fat Head Brewery’s beer immediately the first time we saw that chubby, caricatural face grinning behind sunglasses and a mustache on a bottle of beer. Then, the fat man began appearing, pale, naked, and in a barrel, perched atop tap handles as Fat Head’s beer began infiltrating our local bars. His enormous head had several inches on all of the other handles. It was Ohio in the early 2010s, the fat man was everywhere, and we were skeptical. Read More

Save The Ales | A Toast to the Environment

August 14, 2014 | 1

Do you ever catch yourself at breweries gazing up at the towering steel brew tanks and wondering about water conservation? When a beer you love is released in cans, do you get a little giddy thinking about the outdoor adventures it can now safely accompany you on? Does a farmhouse ale taste the slightest bit more refreshing when you find that the ingredients came from a nearby farm? We could keep going with the questions on sustainability awareness in the craft beer industry, but we’ll stop for time’s sake.

Dry Dock Brewery | Aloha Biz Hawaiian Porter

June 27, 2014 |

ABV 5.7%

We left the Denver city confines last night to get brewing supplies at our favorite store, The Brew Hut, in Aurora, Colorado. After purchasing the items on our list (and then some), we ducked into Dry Dock Brewery for a beer. The Brew Hut is literally fused to Dry Dock’s brewhouse, making after-shopping samples close to impossible to resist. Tricky bastards.
