Pop Culture Week in Haiku
December 12, 2014 | Drew TrollerThat’s right, folks. Two and a half years into doing the pop culture week in review for PorchDrinking, I continue to try to find ways to make the recap of this week’s entertainment news interesting and fresh. And although International Haiku Day (yes, it’s a holiday, according to the internet) isn’t for 4 more months, I think it’s time to get poetic around here. So this week’s stories of celebrity, media, and water-cooler-dom are brought to you in the form of one haiku per topic. Why? I dunno.
Enjoy! Read More
Roundtable Discussion | Christmas Music
December 10, 2014 | Lindsay KrumelThis week PorchDrinking tackles a widely debated issue: How early is too early to start listening to Christmas music? I started listening to Christmas music November 13. Was that too soon? According to our staff, yes, yes it was. I also wanted to know everyone’s favorite songs of the season (secretly so I could add them to my already ginormous Christmas playlist :)). Personally, I’m really digging Karen O’s rendition of “Marshmallow World” for Target, and I don’t think you can ever go wrong with Mariah Carey’s “All I Want For Christmas Is You.” And Frank Sinatra’s Christmas album…classic. Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comment section below!

Four Team Playoff Should Be Eight – Still Better Than The BCS
December 7, 2014 | Mike ZollerWith the four teams now unveiled for the first ever College Football Playoff, the debates will go on long into winter about whether or not the committee got the four teams right. Just like the BCS system, the CFP system is not perfect but in its inaugural year I think they got it right.

December 5, 2014 | Admin‘House of Cards’ Return Announced
You might want to ask for a vacation day on February 27 (it’s a Friday anyway) to be among the first to binge through the third season of ‘House of Cards.’ For some, this means a welcome return to DC with Frank Underwood. For others, this means the return of people being mad at you for not watching a show where everyone sucks and you honestly wouldn’t care if they all died in a fire. Read More
Awesomesauce | Funny Folks
December 4, 2014 | Laura MegoAh, the holidays. That magical time of year when turkey, tree-trimming, and (if you’re a member of my family) inter-generational viewings of “The Hangover” abound! While many of us rejoice that we’ll have one and a half whole days in a row of Christmas Vacation where no one truly expects you to answer a work email (it’s sad that that makes me happy, but such is adult life) others (ahem, also me) are thrilled to have two whole days in a row to troll YouTube for funny videos and not feel guilty about it. PorchDrinking Playlist | Christmas Decorating Inspiration
December 2, 2014 | Scott Hoffman
Yeah, we get that it’s a bit early for a full Christmas playlist, but we also get that you probably need a bit of inspiration for your holiday decorating. So here’s something to play while you set up the tree and try desperately not to fall off the roof of your house. We’ve included a variety of tracks from Sufjan Stevens, Run DMC and Bruce Springsteen. Ideally you’ll be the cool folks playing the amazing Christmas playlist for the rest of the month. Read More

November 27, 2014 | Admin
Look, I don’t care if you have the most loving of families—at some point during your Thanksgiving celebrations, someone is going to say something political or religious or otherwise just piss someone else off. PorchDrinking Playlist | Thanksgiving Playlist Part 2
November 25, 2014 | Ellie Thompson
Just in time for the Thanksgiving holiday, this week’s playlist features songs of recognition and gratefulness. Whether it be Röyksopp’s futuristic cognizance of friendship, Earth, Wind & Fire’s gospel praise “Gratitude”, or Chance the Rapper’s affection for family, these songs surely subsume the various ways to give thanks. And if one Thanksgiving playlist wasn’t enough, perhaps revisit our offering from last year. Thanks for listening! Read More

Faking Adulthood | Preparing for Thanksgiving as a 20 Something
November 24, 2014 | Tristan ChanThanksgiving is my second favorite holiday, ranking only slightly behind America Day (July 4). What makes these two holidays so great? Well they share several key elements that distinguish them from the rest of the pack; the general acceptance of consuming massive levels of food, celebrating the founding of this great country/continent (I like to think of Thanksgiving as the O.G. America Day), and beer… lots of beer. And what Thanksgiving lacks in fireworks, it makes up in turkey, pie and football. However, the combination of family, friends, and gluttony can always yield potentially volatile results, so I thought I’d help you navigate the somewhat treacherous aspects of this time honored holiday with five tips for preparing for Thanksgiving as a 20 something.
9 Pop Culture Stories from this Week (Cosby-free!)
November 21, 2014 | Drew TrollerWhy do I always seem to land the PorchDrinking pop culture week in review on weeks where all anyone is talking about is a horrible, gut-wrenching, disgusting abuse of personal rights committed for or against someone in entertainment? We’ll get there. Or maybe I’ll be too depressed to talk about Mr. Cosby. We’ll see. Got a lot of happier stuff to cover in this week’s pop culture week in review!
