PorchDrinking Does Craft Brewers Conference 2014
April 4, 2014 | Cory PelcWell, folks, Denver is the lucky city this year to host the Craft Brewers Conference for 2014. Denver is already equipped for the influx of beer heads because of the annual Great American Beer Festival that occurs every October in our fine city of suds. This year, though, we are also host city for the Craft Brewers Conference AND the World Beer Cup. And all in the same week. I don’t know how more stoked I can be than I am right now to announce that PorchDrinking.com will be there to provide coverage. Pre-and-post event coverage, live tweeting and, as always, a terrific banter to accompany the beerversation. Why? Because in the end, #itsjustbeer, right?!?
Pop Culture Week in Review: March 29-April 4
April 4, 2014 | Drew TrollerSome weeks, I’m glad I wait until the last day possible to write my pop culture week in review (apologies and shout-out to the great PD editors who put up with my stubbornness). Because on weeks like this, there’s some late-breaking news and I sneak it in under the wire.
So without any further ado, let’s hit the pop culture week in review with a big shake-up in the world of television.
The Full Circle of Motion Pictures
April 3, 2014 | Christian Bolen Walker 1In the 17th century, people were dazzled by the first image projector, dubbed the Magic Lantern. It used the sun or a candle as the light source, a concave mirror, and a painted lantern slide to project images on a wall. Audience members could be convinced that spirits were being summoned or the dead was being raised from the grave. Today, kids are bored when they’re watching their favorite computer animated show on a smartphone that fits into the palm of their hand. We’ve come a long way in the technology of motion pictures. However, some of the recent fads in the medium aren’t actually new at all. They’re over a hundred years old.

Forget Reality, and Give Me the Cubbie Blue Pill | Chicago Cubs Opening Day
March 31, 2014 | Patrick MurrayAlthough the weather in the Eastern half of the United States continues to defy what the calendar proclaims, today is Opening Day. For Chicago Cubs supporters such as me, this year promises to be the fifth straight season of following a team without contention aspirations. Despite the promise of various minor league talents that could make their major league debuts this summer, the general expectation is that this Cubs season will closely follow this script. Read More

Awesomesauce – Star Wars
March 27, 2014 | Laura MegoA long time ago, in a decade far, far away …
I have a confession: our recent discussion regarding some of the coolest things about the 1980s* is incomplete. Sure, we were mostly talking about apparel, but I would be remiss if any discussion of the best stuff from the decade of Madonna and blue eye shadow didn’t include talk of the best movie trilogy of all time: the original Star Wars trilogy. (I see you, Nolan Batman Saga advocates … you are wrong.)

How do you properly dress for a party in the decade you made your debut? Or maybe you missed the 80s and came a little too late to experience the awesomeness. In that case, it’s even more necessary for you to read some ideas of what you will wear for the New Kids on the Block 80′s/Craft Beer Party!

PorchDrinking Playlist | March Mix
March 25, 2014 | Ellie ThompsonThe phrase “March Madness” doesn’t just describe the culmination of NCAA basketball season. Rather, it is a phrase that most accurately depicts the typical state of life in this particular month. March means flux, instability, madness. Whether it’s the quickly dissolving weeks of the year (and consequently the realization it’s been 2014 for two months now), or desperate need for a spring break, it seems March is a time for increased deadlines, assignments, etc. Yet we’re traveling at full speed, and it’s quite the challenge to slow down. These songs by nature reflect that flux. It’s a hodgepodge of some of my favorite covers, remixes and new hits. I hope you enjoy!

Pop Culture Week in Review 3/15-3/21
March 21, 2014 | Christian Bolen WalkerIt was a busy week for the world of pop culture. Progress was made in legal battles, details of highly anticipated film and TV projects were announced, and Courtney Love tried to solve a mystery. As is the case with life, there were good things and bad things about the week. In the interest of ending on a positive note, let’s start by tackling the negative bits. I always was one to ask for bad news first.
