What happens when you have two hometown breweries come together with one goal, to support more than 100 arts organizations in their community? Seems almost impossible to support that many, right? The solution: partner with the nation’s largest united arts fund, ArtsWave, and brew a delicious beer!

We live in a state known for our curious alcohol laws. Laws we would say have inadvertently given strength to the Utah beer industry. Local breweries have been forced to brew beer at the low-alcohol 4% abv in order to serve on draft or be available in grocery or convenience stores. How can this possibly be a good thing you ask? It means: Utah-based breweries perfected the art of the ‘Session’ beer long before ‘Session’ became a thing for breweries (outside of the Beehive state) who looked for ways to avoid knocking out their consumers with huge alcohol content. In a land surrounded by high elevation, we’ve been keeping it low for years.

Happy Days are Beer again! The 21st Amendment of the United States Constitution was ratified on December 5, 1933, ending prohibition. Fast forward to the year 2000 and this famous Amendment inspired a new brewery in San Francisco. 21st Amendment Brewery was founded by Nico Freccio and Shaun O’Sullivan and they opened the doors to their brewpub in the famous South Park neighborhood, a few blocks from the San Francisco Giants ballpark. Some of the fan favorites include: Brew Free or Die IPA, Hell or High Watermelon, Back in Black, Fireside Chat. The fan favorites need to watch their back because there is a new kid on the block and their name is Toaster Pastry.

At the time you are reading this, we are either recovering from a week long hangover or dead! GABF would be the way to die. Hundreds of breweries bringing the best beers in the world. There is nothing greater than walking shoulder to shoulder with tens of thousands of like-minded people. Everywhere you turn is a new friend and a beer. Yep, pretty sure we died. Seems like the pearly gates are drenched in golden suds.
We live in Utah and dream of Denver, Bend, San Diego and Asheville. But wait a minute… if you believe in the alcohol lockdown in the Wasatch Mountains, we surely live in beer hell. We are here to say, this is absolutely not true. We present six GABF medal winning beers from the last several years. So when the Zion curtain locks us in, we will be okay, because Utah brewers make some sweet brews.

Prologue: About Fiction Beer Company

One year ago, Ryan Kilpatrick and his wife Christa Kilpatrick brought Morrison’s quote to life and established Fiction Beer Company as the first brewery on Colfax Avenue. Nestled in the East Denver neighborhoods of Park Hill, Montclair, Stapleton, Mayfair, and Lowry, Fiction has become a local favorite. Their motto is “to rewrite the Denver beer scene by combining the two wonderfully imaginative crafts of beer and literature together.” A year later, they have successfully brought their dream to life: releasing over 28 different styles of beer, all of which tie into the world of literature.
Almost exactly one year ago, I was lucky enough to interview Adam Cayton-Holland, an up-and-coming Denver comedian on the brink of greatness. In that year, Adam has blown up. Adam’s comedy group, The Grawlix (which includes fellow Denver comedians Ben Roy and Andrew Orvedahl), was named to Variety’s list of Top 10 comedians to watch. The Grawlix also wrote and star in an original comedy series coming to truTV in a few months. Those Who Can’t hilariously explores the trials and tribulations of immature high school teachers.
Adam is back in Denver for the time being and will headline the upcoming Offensively Delicious Craft Beer Comedy Show also starring Sam Tallent, Andy Juett, and Kyle Kinane on September 23 at Oriental Theater in Denver. He took some time to update me on the exciting developments in his life.

This time last year we found ourselves in the middle of summer and a social media frenzy. The buzz was everywhere with the ‘brrr’ of buckets being gleefully poured over anxious participants. Being nominated to take the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge ourselves, we experienced the excitement firsthand. It’s great to have fun while spreading awareness about a serious condition (and not to mention raising some serious cash to benefit research to find a cure).

On our far-too-few trips to the Centennial State, we continuously find more reasons to want to stay. From your endless walking trails linking the bustling city life to the eternal wonder of the great outdoors, we are left feeling like we are visiting our true home. The people have been friendly, the weather mostly sunny and housing the most amazing craft beer scene.

If a bottle had a label that said ‘Beer’, would you be interested? We think some people might be, just because trying to ‘not to be cool’ seems to be a form of ‘cool’ these days. It is just as likely in the beer world if there isn’t something interesting on the label, it might not hit the table. These days, label art has been taken to a new level, which proves the unconditional love many brewers have with their liquid gold.

If GABF is the main course, then the South Denver Beer Festival was the perfect appetizer. With over 80 breweries, distilleries, cideries and meaderies in attendance, everyone’s appetite was surely met.
The evolution of a hophead: You drink pils and lagers until your beer geek friend offers up a Uinta Cutthroat or Squatters Full Suspension (not hoppy by today’s standards). You take the first sip and ….. BOOM! Flashback to Keystone’s Bitter Beer Face campaign from the 90’s. Then you avoid the crazy ‘bitter beers’ for years, maybe even a decade, only to try one when there are no tame options.
The taboos associated with Utah seem to be broad and polarizing. Locals are protective of their state. From the outside looking in you can only imagine men with five wives who belong to a cult that won’t allow you to drink alcohol. Visitors to the state seem to revel in its beauty, gloating over world-class ski resorts to the vast red rock desert in the southern regions and are often puzzled over the strange Utah liquor laws.
