Beer lovers rejoice; this weekend, some of the best breweries & brewers converge on Maplewood – St. Louis, MO, for the second annual Side Project Invitational. After taking off 2021 due to COVID, Side Project is coming back with a bang. This year rather than just featuring Barrel Aged Stouts & Barleywines, the format shifts to welcome all Oak-Aged Beers including the wild, funky and sour beer.
We have all seen them lining up outside a brewery as early as 6 a.m. — or sometimes the night before — to ensure they can be the first to claim their coveted release before anyone else and sometimes even flip the bottle on the secondary market. Yes, the rare beer seekers are out there, lurking in almost every brewery and bottle shop just waiting for that whale of a beer to drop.
When I get a quality Pilsner, I forget all about the juicy Triple IPAs and overly fruited Sours that are often all the rage. There’s something timeless about a quality Pilsner that feels right, from the aroma to the light, crisp mouthfeel.
Chicken & Waffles is typically not something you think of when you are thinking of beer; however, St. Louis based Earthbound Beer has turned a classic entrée into a delicious Blonde Ale with their Chicken & Waffles Blonde.
Chicken & Waffles was first brewed ironically back on April 20, 2015. According to Head Brewer & Presiding Comrade Stuart P. Keating, “I believe this beer was inspired by a patron at the bar, claiming we couldn’t possibly make a Chicken and Waffles beer. Challenge accepted!”
Having recently celebrated its third anniversary, Wellspent Brewing Company is still considered a relatively young–yet notable–brewery in the already burgeoning St. Louis craft beer scene. This year, after the rollercoaster of COVID, they also launched a new membership program called “The Well.”
